    My OSK has definitely changed over time. For a couple years, I was building it up to be the "fix whatever breaks on the trail," mostly - I think - because that's how the folks I found myself on trips with (Monte and Mike, primarily) were setup. I even had Monte get me a military case, and I filled it with parts - LBJs, CV axle, u-joints, etc., and gobs of tools - multiple sets of sockets, all sorts of pry bars, etc.

    But then I realized that I don't ever want to try and rebuild some major component on the trail. So I started downsizing. Now, my focus is on carrying things that will help me band-aid myself back to civilization.

    I won't suggest that I'm there yet, or that I've found the right balance. There are still some things that I think would leave me stranded - like if the alternator totally craps the bed, I don't have a spare. But that's the direction I'm going.

    I know. :) It was quite the wake up call for me when I realized that I had basically no tools and you had an entire shop. That's what got me started down that same path. Even though I've swung back the other direction, I've tried to be very thoughtful about what I continue to keep, and I'm quite thankful for having been exposed to your approach. Plus, even if I don't use it for the OSK anymore, I'm extremely glad to have purchased the medium military case for it! ;) :thumbsup:

    I don't know that that's a bad thing. I mean, you got done what you needed to, and returned under your own power. That's a win in my book.

    I guess that’s fair, I usually don’t have to limp very far home so there not really much reason to bring the rolling toolbox and parts store with me

    Yeah I have really 3 different tool kit places haha all are separate from the OSK mostly except for shit that is like...well I need the OSK anyways usually if I'm getting that out haha

    yeah all different. I know know about Mike but I know he's been with me most explosions and we have always been able to take care of most things other that wheel bearings, 1 LBJ incident, and the coil buck incident. That's pretty awesome

    ...and, as I know you are a huge proponent of, the best OSK is a second truck along on the adventure. Then, walking is rarely necessary, even in the worst of cases.

    Going to be doing lots of solo adventuring this summer with a minimal OSK.

    Will have my bike with me, so that makes getting out of somewhere much easier.

    Also probably will pick up an increach in case of more serious emergencies.

    I can get 50% off of SPOT devices (kinda like the garmins).

    From my experience I think the garmin is the better option though

    I've always kind of wondered what I do if we were wheeling and I broke my leg. I can drive my truck without a clutch but some of the stuff we get into is a little more difficult to do that in than the normal street

    That's great for some stuff sure. Very poor man's crawl box haha. I see a lot of people who don't have leg issues use it too, makes me wonder if they shouldn't have an auto instead.

    I use it all the time and wouldn't want an auto. It definitely has its place on technical trails in my opinion and to get you off the highway when your fuel pump becomes disconnected... :anonymous:

    I have full confidence that the starter/battery can withstand the abuse.

    I have the same gauge wiring running for my winch as I do the starter, because the stock 8ga is worrisome for extended cranking especially with the load of the whole truck. But yeah the gear reduction starters seem more than up to the task.

    I have wanted to take a heat gun to things after cranking on it for 30 seconds or so. Always get caught up in the excitement and don't think about it in the moment.

    nah come on. That's not what would happen.

    We'd park the truck. Pack your ass out to an emergency room. Then go back and get your rig.

    This is the fastest way to get you to help and to keep the truck safe. driving with a broken leg would be stupid and very risky for yourself and others on the road.

    For me, that's relevant if you're fishing, biking, or a few miles in on a hike.

    Guess it depends on what you're doing during your travels.

    Ah I see. Zane was a bit more specific in that it was "wheeling"

    For the other things. I'm handy enough to make a stretcher to help haul someone out, or splints and crutches. Or for you I'd just carry your small ass and/or make a drag behind stretcher of some kind to get back to the trucks. It's not impossible to figure out that stuff. Going to suck for the person with the broke leg but depending on the status of the injury moving them is either best or not. A lot of factors to think about before doing anything.

    It's still do able to help get people out or to a point where SAR can easily get to you and your injured friend. Although I suppose depending on where you are I might try and tough it out to get to the ER myself instead of getting a giant bill for SAR as some areas charge for that while others don't.

    If you're solo. Well, then an inreach will be a life saver. Literally.
