Pretty much everyone I know has their SXS plated and full coverage insurance. All I’m really gathering is you guys don’t like SXS’s, which is whatever, if you cancel SXS’s the mob will be out to cancel the Taco crowd next. Be careful what you wish for.

I specifically exempted enthusiasts because they're not the ones using their SXSs like dillweeds

 

I sure could use another trip to Utah, just need a decent amount of lead time to get the days off. The later into April/May the better.

 

Im not sure. Think im going there this weekend so will try and find it. If i had to guess though the mid 80s early 90s?

a lot I bet is still open. Most of them were oil/gas exporation roads. If anything they never "closed" more so than half just disappeared haha

And probably have to have the same safety features too..which then would literally deaf the point of them and make them just a standard vehicle that would be too heavy and bloated with all the stuff a standard car has to be fitted with these days.

I know they are fun and they are useful in a ton of ways. But as Zane is pointing out, most owners abuse them and what they can do and are mostly just under educated. If something like this leads them to become more educated and more aware of the damages they are causing...great. Then it'll stop there and only get better. But right now its spiralling out of control and things are fast approaching being shut down forever with the way some behave.

Now I'll also admit that dirt bikers are just as bad in ways if not worse haha but again, as Zane has pointed out, SXS are WAY easier to sit down in and start driving vs getting on a dirt bike and hauling ass around. Anyone can sit in a SXS and start having fun or doing damage. Most people need a lot of practice before doing anything serious on a dirt bike.

This is a wake up call if anything for SXS owners everywhere. Instead of trying to fight it, it would be great if SXS owners instead looked at their own ranks and realized what they are doing and how they could change that as a community and work with the rest of the offroad community to better themselves and in turn everyone else's name/reputation. But I doubt that will happen. Sure isn't right now with the way the Rally at the Rocks people are handling it..

 

i genuinely wonder if the police would treat a couple guys on dirtbikes riding through town the same as a couple of sxs driving through town, just based on the prejudice against sxs

 

Are the bikes legal and plated?

 

Lets assume 2 situations:

1. unsure how other states do it, in idaho you used to be able to buy a plate (they did away with the plate for a sticker) that allowed you to ride on the road for trail access. If it just had an OHV plate? of course not a ut plate, but if it had an ohv plate for another state...would they not bother to pull you over? if its a converted road legal dirt bike then there no question there. Hell, i can wire a headlight and tail light in 1 hour and "look" really legal lol
2. Nope, just a dirtbike. Of course its easy to say "oh they for sure will bust em" but again, a lot of this is about perception...and in my experience police generally give more leeway to dirt bike riders for things like riding OHV on road if they are not braaping and obeying the traffic rules

 

Depends I guess. It's a place based around recreation, but it's still a "small town" generally small town cops have the tiniest little hard ons for out of towner's no matter the size of the infraction. In WA you'd get a ticket no doubt, OHV plates are just that, for OHV use. If your bike doesn't have street legal provisions you'll get a hefty ticket. If it has no proof of anything (no OHV stickers or road legal plates) it's instant impound here. I don't think it's a winning situation for anyone if you do anything dumb enough to get pulled over in Moab in any vehicle.

 

I wish it was just a fine, its the insurance hike I dislike. I'd pay the speed tax willingly if that's all it was. If I could just hand Johnny Figpucker my card to pay the ticket and be on my way all at once every road would be the autobahn haha.

 

I also have a clean record and my ins has gone down a ton since I turned 25. So now I'm just trying to maintain that haha. I'm somehow under $500 for 6mo. Even with the BMW in the mix now

The whole reason this happened is the state of Utah passed a law that allowed all Ohv to be used on streets. Moab was of course as it has been very busy with Ohv. More and more naturally. So they passed their own city ordinance that banned ohv from being on city streets.

So should be sxs, dirt bikes, and ATVs I believe.

 

Does the Moab restriction apply to to multi-purpose-vehicle plated vehicles?

 

Wow, that is very low for Wa. Do they know about your 60 mile commute?

 

I put on the insurance form that I bought it for commute purposes. It doesn't ask about distance traveled though.

 

I think you are lucking out. Underwriters base premiums on risk assessment. And you are driving through the heart of darkness twice a day.

 

I dunno, I didn't make the prices. The cruiser and taco are both on the policy as pleasure vehicles and I don't do anything but liability on the Taco or BMW, neither would ever be worth fixing in insurance eyes or mine if they were wrecked bad enough.
