Definitely a review that reeks of bias towards the Rivian. But guess that is expected when you go on a factory provided test drive. And dude definitely doesnt take his supposedly "modified and lifted" Tacoma if he thinks it cant handle those forest service roads lol.

Now lets see its real world towing and payload and effects on range. If Rivian really did manage to achieve 50% range while towing 11k THAT would be a game changer. Thats always been a hindrance on EV's. Add payload or tow and range goes to crap.

I do really like the Rivians though. Been following them for awhile now. Nice to actually start seeing them out and about....well in videos at least since their production numbers are low

Did you guys see Long Way Up? Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s third motorcycle trip. They ride the Harley-Davidson Livewire and their support vehicles included two Rivian trucks.
Sort of anecdotal but they did pretty well considering the trip. It’s Worth the watch.

yeah idk about towing. But has the power and torque for it that's for sure. Range is everything though.

Ford's is about it with an actual production model I think almost ready. Cyber truck is a joke IMO. Fords though isn't as fancy drive train wise. Also the Hummer is almost out.

They mentioned that in the review. Never watched it though.

I’ve been eyeballing the EV Hummer, it looks pretty nice I think. Good way to revive that brand after it’s demise.
Rivian really jumped in and invested a lot into R&D, at least from the looks of it so far.

yeah but is so expensive. Yet another annoying thing about EVs in general. Way to expensive. Only the Ford is reasonably priced.

Oh yeah, I won’t be able to afford one. I don’t live somewhere an electric vehicle would be practical anyway, at least for me. I just want to see how they turn out!

It's only practical for me because my place of work has charging stations(that are never used, but would be free basically). But impractical due to cost anyways. So yeah. I ultimately no pro EV's. Not where I live and also not as a long term replacement for current vehicles. Hydrogen should be where all the effort should be going IMO. But whatever.

    yeah Toyota and Honda.

Plus Toyota made a Hydrogen burning engine which works kind of like a gas engine but the pollution is a tiny tiny fraction of a gas engine. Even that would be better.

That’s cool, I could see that being more popular than the hydrogen cell type.

Been meaning to watch it but just havent yet. But some of what I heard from that it sounded like the Harley's were the limiting factor more so than the trucks.

Its the one area of electric that sucks. Add any sort of real payload or towing and range goes to crap. Especially if you are in hills. Think it was the Tesla Model X someone did some towing tests with. Sure it claims it can tow 4k. But they tried towing like 3k and went up one of the long grades and the range went from full down to like 30-50 miles.

Even the Tesla Semi Trucks are pretty limited. Think they only have a range of 500 miles. Which for a semi is pretty crap. But they will be a decent option for shorter routes (like distribution center to store type stuff)

CA has had hydrogen cars for a bit now. Though they havent really taken off. Kind of like EV the infrastructure blows. Wasnt to long ago one of the car companies was offering a deal where they would give you a 10k fuel card if you bought a hydrogen car from them.

Yeah the trucks did really well despite a couple of hard hits
The bikes seemed to fair well too, they just had some issues getting them charged a few times.
Biggest issue was range, surprise surprise.

Tell me if I'm crazy, or if this might be workable...

So, I have an axle housing on order. Assume it's ~6-8 weeks to arrive at my door. To salvage those two months of trips, I'm considering a "hack" fix to the existing housing. Hack fix would be:
    1. Get under the truck and clean up the existing housing to find the crack. Hopefully it's on the outside of the perch.
    2. Clean up the housing around the crack; grind the crack a bit; weld the crack.
    3. Do a hack-patch over the crack area (3" tubing, 1/4" thick), and the other side of the housing - like Ryan's fix, except not nearly as good. Like pretty crappy really. So not really at all like Ryan's fix. The idea would be to get more material spanning the crack/welded on both sides of the housing. Band-aid style.
My thought is that I might be able to do this (a) relatively quickly, (b) without draining and removing the entire housing, (c) in a way that would reduce the risk of catastrophic failure, but wouldn't (likely) really solve the problem. Essentially, I'd just be throwing away the housing when I get the new one anyway, I think.

My hope is that it'd allow me enough "extra" time - say ~3 trips (6-8K miles) - so that I'm not just "waiting" to get the new housing.

Drill the end of the crack(s), and heat the housing to try and burn any oil that will get pulled through when you weld.

Here's my two cents... it's just what I would do (provided I didn't already have another housing in my garage, but I do :p). Chop the perches off, grind smooth, get some ruff stuff perches (I have a spare pair in my garage if you want to avoid the wait), grind and fill the crack with weld after torching the oil out of the area, grind smooth again, put a piece of tubing over the area to distribute, weld on new perches, send it

OK, I hear what you guys are saying - essentially you're saying to do what Ryan did. (And Ryan, as I mentioned there - thanks for all the detail via PM, I've been through it all several times.)

What I'm saying is that I want to try to shortcut "the right (or at least better) fix," for something that will work for <10K miles. Because I already have a new housing on the way, and I just don't want to wait for it to arrive. Is that crazy or dumb?
