hey Monte, (or Steve if you happen to be lurking in here at the moment)

do you know how your dad trained Bix and Sachmo? Mine is getting better but is having issues with commands when he is off leash or distracted.

Start with commands before you let him/she eat. Like sit/stay/ok. That's an easy way to enforce obedience when they want something very bad, at least it works well with labs who love food more than almost anything haha. That's what we did with our dogs. Or before they get let out they need to obey some sort of command... It's the kind of stuff that needs to be started early though so you might struggle for a while and it depends on the breed.

he does fine with those and has a dog door so that won't work so well. he does well with sit, stay, off, down, and back but has issues when off leash and "come" or when he gets distracted by other dogs or people. i got him at 1yr old as a rescue and have had him about 6 months. seriously considering getting him a training collar. one of the colorado guys uses them and pretty much swears by them so i might bite the bullet and get one.

a collar that you can have just make a beep is useful. That's what we used after the shock was no longer needed, but yes they know when that collar is on lol.

they're not dumb but i feel that if you use it to reinforce commands and train them with and without the collar on all the time they will learn.

most collars have independent tone, vibrate, and variable shock

I know age has a lot to do with it too. after a couple of years of calming down labs become amazing. Our lab has gotten to the point of following head nods too.

We never have used shock collars. He has never been chained or fenced in either. Has only been on a leash one time in his entire life and was tame enough we even took him into a couple of businesses.

Really we didn't do near as good a job with Bix and Satchmo as we did with our last Lab Tom..they are pretty wild as well when they are off leash. Bix though is very obedient for the most part.

A lot of it is just repetition and control. You NEED to make sure they know YOU are boss. Always. Never a doubt in their mind. Sometimes that means you ahve to give a bit of tough love..but you are ultimate alpha and they need to know that. Bix lately has almost gotten rambunctious and almost seems to challenge you with that..haha such an odd dog..

Also you can't reward them with like a treat for doing commands. Just reward them will "good boy" and lots of petting :)

But for off the leash you just gotta smack em when they break the rules. Or yes, get a shock collar. We use them a lot and the dogs know when they are on and behave very well when they are on :p haha But you can't leave them on all the time or it'll rub them raw.

Holy shit, Satchmo lives to eat i swear...eat and be petted..all he wants in life haha

they do help. Just have to use it correctly for them and they will learn with it fast.

On my first dog. I used a book called Water Dog. Great book there are several flavors of that book depending on what you want to achieve. Just Google it and you'll see them.

he knows what i say goes when he is on the leash but off leash is hit or miss because of distractions. shock collar is looking better and better for the most part. another member close to me offered to give me a rundown and some tips with them so i might take him up on that.
that seems to be the conclusion i'm coming to.
    thanks, i'll look into it.

    140amp 110v MIG?

Practice like a mofo with that before doing anything major haha Welder that small is hard to get good penetration with and it'll be flux core looks like instead of gas so that adds to the "difficulty" to get good clean deep welds.

But good deal either way
