Th difference would be the maf sensor. It's different on the older trucks.

And thanks! Had a few trickle in last night. I don't expect too much activity until the final day but so far it's promising!

I think you'll be happy with the lightbar and ditch lights. I've got a 20" light bar at bumper height and been more than happy with it. No true ditch lights for me but add those in and it would be even better. But distance wise the 20" works great. So can only imagine a 30" would be better

Gotta have somewhere to store maxtrax

It’s difficult to want to put much up there. Don’t want a bunch of weight or anything taller than the GFC. I’m interested to see how much room I’ll actually have with such a shortened roof rack.
Good to hear. I’ve honestly had very few instances where I need a ton of light. But every now and then ditch lights would be nice.

It's nice for driving at night around where I live. Lots of wildlife that likes to be right next to the road.

That's where the light bar is good to see far out, but ditch lights would be nice to see more off to the sides.

What the 6.5' long flat thing over the bed can hold a couple of 3lbs worth of maxtrax? haha

After the roof rack the height difference is probably what, 4'' at the most? idk. Haven't had a sort of roof rack myself. So not worth it. But have at it! Id hope its reversible at least.

Night trips up in the mountains would certainly benefit from ditch lights. Too many elk up there. But, I’m usually not in front so I don’t want to blind others. On solo trips I always aim to get to camp BEFORE dark haha
That’s where the solar panels have to go in the future. Not that I’ve ever been in a situation where my auxiliary battery wasn’t enough to power things.

While I mostly agree with your interpretation of a roof rack’s usefulness, the more things I can get out of the bed of the truck the better. I’m also just very interested in a roof rack in general and how much room a shortened one will provide. I went with a Sherpa brand and I’m interested to see how it mounts compared to other brands. Supposed to be much more simplified compared to others and definitely reversible.

From photos it doesn't look like you have much room. Maxtracks and that's it. I doubt solar would take up the entire top of the gfc. That's be a ton of solar!

But good to hear it's not going to damage the roof permanently. Be a good experiment.

I haven't looked in your build in a while but would think stacking gear up in the front of the bed would be best?

Nah, a couple of solar panels is all I’d like to attempt eventually. But, I’m leaning towards the adhesive backed ones to keep it as low profile as possible.

Slowly but surely I’m reducing the amount of junk filling up the bed of the truck. Currently the spare tire, gas can, water can, and firewood/propane fire fill the front of the bed up. Rear bumper is on the way to move a majority of that stuff out. Eventually I want a single rear drawer along with some type of panel to spread across the wheel wells in order to provide my daughter with somewhere to sleep when she’s older.

I haven't looked at their Taco designs, but I liked their (old) 4Runner rack style, and bought the extruded aluminum cross rails that I used to build the rack on my T4R from them, and I loosely modelled my rack on the general feel of their Antero. Seems like a pretty cool company.

    And now for today's humor.

DCSB with "Night Vision" "3rd row seating" (among a long list of other things) for only a $2K.

I should just send them my money now: https://seattle.craigslist.org/est/ctd/d/walnut-creek-2002-toyota-tacoma-double/7421344655.html

I’m looking forward to seeing their design in person. Wasn’t planning on purchasing one until later in 2022. But their black Friday sale combined with their plan to raise prices afterwards pushed me over the edge.

Seems like a completely legitimate ad. Especially with the extra options like power adjustable pedals too!

Shit a bumper is going to solve all of that. Then you'll have tons of room. Plus I'd be looking at optimizing the rear cab more then stuff on the roof. Once I did that it helped a ton in my 1st gen double cab.

I’m definitely looking forward to finally having a bumper to move the large items out of the bed. The unique aspect that I’m dealing with is the fact that I use the bed of the truck as part of my tent “living space”. So having as much of the bed open to stand in is a goal of mine. As for the back seats, I can’t rely on that area to always store items. The under seat and behind seat storage holds all of my tools and minor repair items, but the seats themselves typically have the dog and kid seat.

Really the last thing that doesn’t really have a good place out of the bed would be the hi-lift. Considering just removing it from my items I always carry. I’ve still never used it for a real situation since the bottle jack has always been a better option.

    Ah dog and kid.

lol get the kid there own tent :D (i know she? is way too young for that but fun thought). Seems to me if you had a setup that was easy to load and unload the bed then that would also help. I know for me, it's pretty easy to empty my bed in about 2 minutes with they way I have things packed in the military boxes. That an option? Or you trying to avoid that? Cause Idk how possible that is to sleep 3/4 for extended trips and keep the bed "openish" with the back seat full.

I have used a hi lift a lot haha change tires and recovery a couple times. Also it's handy to "level" the truck with at camp off the sliders or bumpers haha mine fits pretty nicely in the bed and is easy to take in and out so rather have it than not.

i have thought about adding a floor jack as I have the room for it in one of my cases. Because in a lot of ways it would be safer/handy to have. And not too heavy really if it replaces my CO2 bottle which was heavier.

When it’s just me the setup works great. I don’t need to move anything other than the stove and food container. But when it’s all three of us and the dog I have to bring an additional tote for extra food and items.

The dog sleeps in the back seat of the truck at night and currently our daughter sleeps with us, so it works alright. It’s awfully tight with all of us in the GFC tent due to only being 50” wide. So as soon as we can trust her to sleep “downstairs” by herself I want to have the bed set up and cleared out to allow for that.

With the massive spare tire and everything else it’s currently overwhelming. If I can make a drawer that holds all of the other random items like food, utensils, and stove then I’ll essentially only have firewood/propane fire left out in the bed of the truck. I’m considering mounting a small propane tank on the swing-out as well as get one of those racks that sit above the spare tire to leave everything out of the bed. But that’s probably too much weight added to the swing-out :notsure:

I’d love to check out one of those Pro Eagle jacks. Seems like an awful lot for a floor jack though. Idk how much your floor jack weighs, but mine is a pain to move around due to its shape and weight.

Nah Im just talking an aluminum 1.5 ton one with a a dirt sled:

Idk how heavy it is honestly. but never that bad. Then just get an jack extension.

Seen people just take those and add their own wheels too like a pro eagle. But not sure i'd trust that.

Two jerrys and a tire is a lot on a swing out. almost 200lbs worth of stuff. If it's a dual maybe? Idk. I wouldn't do more than that.

Shit'll buff out though. It's a never ending puzzle: how to setup the truck haha

Too many uses in my book to ditch the hi-lift. Come along, jack, clamp, truck leveler.

Surprised more people don't do this.

me too. But also not really.

    A) Most people bury they hi lift so its not easy to get to
    B) most people don't keep theirs clean so its a PITA to use.

I'll admit I read a post from you saying you did it and was like "Genius!" and have done it a few times now. bit easier with the access cab for sure as the double cab it blocks a door if you use the slider.
