Not sure who you were asking about miles since regear, but I'm at 127K. Will certainly be taking a look when I swap the third over to the new housing (when it arrives)!

Ben @m3bassman - I know how you feel about adding value, but for the love of all that is good, can you add some avatar to your profile. The placeholder bugs me after all these years. Even if you add the 4Runner you just sold, hahaha. Or the mini cooper. Or a grumpy old man.

 

We found this in the bottom of the housing after putting the diff out. Upon close inspection, the biggest piece is whats left of the bolt head.

 

Actually, that was directed at you. Those bolts should not have backed out. It is an indication (IMO) that JTs failed to use locktite when they reassembled the diffs. If feasable, I suggest checking yous for torque spec when you redo your rear axle.

 

Yep, certainly planning on it. Maybe I'll back one out and check for loctite as well.

What a night. It was, unfortunately, the Beginning of the End.

 

Wow thats crazy. THough when i swapped the locker over in Frank that diff was loose too from that guy.

The 8.4 has the nut locks at least. Kind of odd the elocker doesnt.

Ring gear is okay? The carrier sure looks like it took a beating.

The carrier took a huge beating. I am going to haul it over to Randy's Ring & Pinion in the morning. We are hoping it is still structurally sound. One of the pinion bearings is in a bad way too. Can't see it, but is very notchy. I suspect that is where most of the noise was coming from.

If the carrier is no good, this is going to get very expensive.

I don't see how the carrier wouldn't be okay still. Might be worth seeing if the 8.4 bolt locks fit though.

How do those get torqued with the clips in place?

 

The tabs bend up after you torque.
