Well getting a starter out is a lot harder on an auto because of the transmission lines. I decided to pull the catalytic converter to make it easier to get out and in the process broke a stud. Which sucks but I thought it would come out easy seeing as how I just had it out.

Starter was super f***** The shaft has a ton of play in it and there's no balls left in the bearing right underneath it and the bearing cap is broken off. Never seen one do that before anyway.

So not even sure if it's rebuildable but I'll cross that bridge when I get there currently trying to get the stud out of the crossover.

Mike's blew up similarly. I was finding balls from that bearing all over as we took the truck more apart

 

Ive never seen that happen. Can you replace it? Or is it dead forever?


Also, can you remember what the "tow package" came with? i know it had a different fan clutch but did it have a different alternator? When i was diagnosing the truck not starting i noticed the Alt had a 120amp fuse which seemed way high for the 80amp alt..

yeah i figured the cat would come out no issues but alas didn't work out that way. But got to buy a stud extractor and I have to say it worked great. I hit it with the torch and oil and let it sit about 30min and the extractor slowly pulled it out. So worked out okay.

Was wanting to tear the honda apart today but spent all afternoon on Igor instead. But at least Devin has transportation now.

 

I'm sure you could, I personally wouldn't bother.

Tow package got the same alt as everyone else. 120a fuse is normal on newer models. It's not to stop from overdrawing the alt it's to stop the fuse box from overdrawing its own wiring from the batt

 

Guess I just never paid attention to it. Was bit shocked to see that large a fuse on it. But cool.


Damn. that's too bad. I guess I could bring it in for the core charge then.

 

I used my old starter as a core. It may have been rebuildable, but it was pretty fucked up.

 

Yeah it had some Oklahoma teeth from being so poorly supported when the bearing blew

 

Teeth on mine aren't bad. I think it literally happend in the last month mostly. When it was -20 out it really really was struggling to start. I though my battery was going bad is all though. But then it warmed up and still really struggled to start. Then natrually wouldn't at all. Then it would just spin the starter. I was nervous my brand new flexplate had ruin teeth.

 

The flex plates are pretty sturdy. I'm pretty sure mine found a couple of those errant ball bearings from the starter.

 

well had the old one still if needed. Not that dropping the tranny where it is was an option right now..would have sucked.

Do our trucks know what gear we are in and use a different ecu map based on that?

 

Nope, auto trucks know but there are no mapping differences it's just so they can retard timing during a shift. You're just hitting different cells in the same map because of load differences
