    Mr Dirty Pool has demonstrated that the OEM ball cup actually wraps around the ball, holding it in place. With this design, slight movement starts to occur when this retaining materiel starts to wear. On the OEM units, failure occurs when the retaining materiel of the cup wears away enough to allow the ball to escape. Typically this is because all the grease has escaped to the point and there is a bare metal on metal condition.

    Conversely, he has shown the Moog/Sainke/555 ball joint design does not capture the ball in a wraparound socket. Makes me wonder why anyone would consider running this cheap solution. Doesn't seem to be worth the risk.

    Are the grease pouches on your OEM units intact?

    From the outside they look fine. But that's part of the problem, it's what's going on inside that's huge unknown. Maybe they are fine, but I would like to replace them by the end of the year. Reason for moogs would be a bandaid until I can afford better units to throw in it. I wouldn't run them more than a year or so and it's not like the truck sees many miles regularly. Like right now it is only because I am waiting to order parts to fix my daily. It was just a thought but I do appreciate you bringing logic and questioning mine on the matter.

    Ryan hasn't run OEMs in years. And we all know he's not nice to his shit. I don't think you'll have any issues daily driving with them. I do 10 miles of dirt county roads sometimes which are terrible washboards. I'm not worried about it.

    Got rid of OEM 4 years ago. Got tired of replacing them every year. I believe the fsm says to replace if there is more than a mm of play. I've been on one of the Moogs for 4 years now and it's still tight. From the latest discussion from dirty pool it doesn't sound like any play will be noticed because of some rubber acting as a spring inside. I didn't quite grasp what he was saying. I'll likely change them this winter just as a precaution. I'll cut one in half along with a used oem just to see them side by side.

    There are some moog lbjs that were under a recall. I looked up the part numbers I used and didn't see anything about a recall. Probably worth double checking before you order.


    AC clutch slipping when it engages?

    hm also possible. THough I did not have the AC on this last bit. Although maybe it was on defrost which runs the AC.

    Defrost definetly uses ac compressor. I think it's automatic on my Tacoma but I have to select it on the T100 for the defrost to work more efficiently. Not sure how it is on the earlier Tacomas

    This is on my O3 which definitely uses the ac automatically on defrost. Started doing that in 98 I believe.

    Hmm doesn't sound quite like that. It's more of a bearing sound.

    Have you replaced the idler bearing just to eliminate that as a possibility?

    Sounds like we are shooting a few different things at you. I think that at your mileage, you could even justify it as PM to replace the idler, the fan bracket and fan clutch. It could be the bearing on the bracket that is going and while not a common failure of you search here it has hit plenty of folks. I'm sure it won't hurt and hay silver your issue.

    Yeah a new one went in like 2 weeks ago. Is much quieter and I knew that thing was bad, has been for like 2 years.

    I did the TB with a new water pump at 220k, sitting right at 275 so I think that should be fine. The clutch though is probably in need of replacement either way. And I bet the AC clutch bearing too.

    No it has its own separate bracket that mounts to the block with 3 bolts. Happy to be mistaken but that's what I recall when I replaced mine. Trucks I the parking lot but I'm too lazy to go out and check.
