You stop more, my avg speed is certainly lower. I'm pretty timid with it, it's a very complicated vehicle, electric roof, water tanks, lines, lots of electrical, I don't abuse it knowing that all those things can be damaged from being too abusive on it, so nice and slow is the speed. Since we are talking cameras, one thing I hope to use with the van is the elevated platform of the roof for taking pictures!

You are right about the real time feedback without pulling the camera from your face. The Fuji I used, I thought that the EVF was still grainy and I could sense a bit of lag when moving.

I hate the rear LCD for shooting too, I'm with you on that, but if needed it's there I suppose. I may find it a necessary evil in conjunction with a remote for some of the long distances I may shoot, just to prevent touching the camera.

Nice! Good call I think since youre starting down the birding/wildlife stuff. I know a lot of wildlife folks that us the 7d due to the crop sensor. Every bit of range helps.

I hope your tripod has a mono pod break away leg. Mine does and would be helpful and lighter to take on walks.

Does look like the sensor could have some damage. Which I mean...come on. That things ancient and has had a rough life bouncing around

It's a carbon fiber tripod with a monopod part, won't know how that works until I get it. I figure it'll all be light enough to carry in a bag. Picked up a shoulder harness setup for carrying the camera due to its weight haha it was hurting my elbow after a couple miles this weekend, and the 7D is obviously heavier. But now I'll have a two body setup when hiking around

That T2i has been a trooper. Its been bounced around, covered in dust, dunked in Kane Creek, and generally I was hard on it and it held up over the last decade. Impressive really.

I do a lot of hiking with mine, and I've found this clip to be great. Puts the weight of the camera on your hips rather than shoulders, and doesn't really get in the way of walking, for me. I wear it over my front left pocket.

    https://ebay.us/ZkS2kF

The foot piece just slips into the tripod as well, which is convenient.

I've seen you with that before, it would work with a lighter/smaller setup. How much does yours weigh? Mines pushing 5#s now. It would hang past my knee and the lens hood is 5" diameter so I would be banging it into bushes, rocks, and probably Venice too. Being on my chest should be more comfortable and safer for the camera.

Mine is right at 3.75 lbs (3lbs, 12.3oz) so definitely lighter than yours, with a 4" diameter lens hood. Shorter though, at 10" in length, so only to my mid-thigh. I have had to start putting the lens cap on between shots, since I was worried about sharp twigs scratching the glass as I push through low brush, brambles, and up rocky cliff faces.

Ah yes the joys of mirrorless, lighter weight. Also more compact.

Your concerns would be even exaggerated due to my short stature

Also I spent a couple hours this morning working through the AF features and options (with the help of tutorials by a wildlife photographer). Boy does it seem like a whole new world of opportunities with this new body, not to mention a whole other pool of variables to manage haha. You can really fine tune how the AF functions and reacts.

Was overcast after work but still tried to play with the camera. With the extender it's maxed at f/8 so I had to run ISO at 2000-3200 to have any shutter speed. I think that the extender will be useful with the right light. Tough conditions to shoot in, but I found a canal just a few minutes walk from home that was packed with critters.

But what really impressed me was a quick swing and fire to catch a duck cruising by. Camera worked well to focus fast and get a shot. Never could I pull this off with the old body. The potential is high come good light!

Looks pretty good for high iso I think.

Pretty common to shoot high. I'd bet there is a sweet spot. What's the native iso of the sensor?

Yeah it was impressive for the ISO. I hope for sharper images in better light. I was racing the sun behind the clouds, not optimal. Native ISO i think is 16k? i would have to rewatch some reviews to know  i would rather shoot around 400. The focusing capabilities will be a game changer im sure. Tomorrow ill play with the new 24mm lens on the T2i and see how that goes.

I'd try sticking to 160 and multiples of it. So 320,640,1250. Usually on Canon sensors that are crops that works better.

Interesting. The T2i didn't have those gaps, so I assumed it was better to stick to the rounded numbers. I think the logic was that the in between values are kinda fudged, and those whole numbers are true. A quick search shows you are probably spot on though. I'll have to try it out.

I think it's true for the more prosummer lineup, like the D serise(60D,70D,80D,ect) and the 7D since they use the same sized sensor or did at one point. Plus the 1D too I think? I haven't looked at still cameras in a loonnnnnng time. More video cameras

I know it was noticeable on my 60D though to use 1250 for my "high iso" setting. Anything higher is pretty grainy but the 1250 was very manageable. More so than say 1000 even.

So wouldn't be surprised if it was similar with your current body.

I've always found this set of charts useful. The T2i isn't on there, but all the prosumer ones are.

    https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Canon EOS 7D Mark II,Canon EOS 80D

You want the dynamic range to be as high as possible at a given ISO. My old 80D was super interesting, because it was basically linear through the entire range. (which has some name that I'm forgetting)

The T2i is in there too, all of the T series are three digit bodies in other markets, T2i is 550D

You're probably right. I'll play with it and see. Photoshop was pretty good with doing denoise but you lose sharpness from it. Like I said I shot at 3200 and the pictures were still usable surprisingly. The other surprising thing is with the old setup I had to run (1/focal length) for shutter speed to work. (400mm = 1/400 minimum shutter speed). But I was shooting way slower last night and managed to not have motion blur, smoother shutter button and the IS on the lens seems to work better on the 7D for some reason. I should be shooting 1/800 shutter, but I was down around 1/200

hm that's cool. I'll show this to my film guy. Be curious to see what he says. He's very anti "dynamic range" based. And he knows a hell of a lot more about this shit than me.

That's pretty neat! So according to that the 7D is certainly an improvement, but dang if the 5D is a huge step forward.

I may regret not jumping to the full frame, it's a compromise, more distance or better low light. Thanks for sharing!
