In optimal conditions yeah, but I can see the FF benefiting from less post processing. Was happy to have a bit more light tonight, weather was blowing and a bit rainy too, but the camera worked well, I'm able to pull of shutter speeds that were never possible before, yet shooting at a much greater focal length.

And of course my 24mm came in today, I think I'll really like it for walking around and landscapes. Super compact, so with the light body T2i, it's going to be a nice carry along.

Need to play more but even down at f2.8 it seems quite sharp.

You could drop your fstop a lot more too on the long lens. Unless it doesn't go lower I suppose.

After this weekend you'll get an hour of daylight back so that'll help. Or is that next week?

:notsure: It is a federal law that is mandating it.

Changing it from the current way would be a state by state thing right now. There is a bill in the WA state legislature being considered that would make DST permanent year round. We'll see where that goes. Right now only Hawaii and Arizona ignore the Fed.

Can you buy Marijuana in MT yet? Another example of a federal law that many states are ignoring.

But I agree with you. Days are already short enough during the winter months. Not having DST year round makes no sense to me.

Yeah but I want the DST schedule not Standard time. More light in the evening after work than morning.

Yes you can in certain counties. Not all counties you can buy it. But it's legal to use state wide.

As with most things, there are compromises made in my setup. By default the lens is an f/5.6 at 400mm. It's good, not as great as say a 400mm f/4 prime glass, but the compromise on that end is cost, the f/4 is $12,000.... now when you add an extender to a lens it effectively changes the f stop, so my lowest f stop becomes f/8. What is neat is that the camera recognizes the extender is there, so the setting parameters on the camera know f/8 is the bottom and the focal length data changes, it know 400mm is now 560mm. And it limits the AF to only the center point, I lose the flexibility of using all my focus points.

Stick with me, I know I'm in the weeds here... it basically means that I have to be clever with when I use the extender. I need good light and static subjects for it to perform well. So on overcast days, or capturing birds in flight, it's best to lose the distance and crop images in post rather than use the extender. I've been playing with it in tough conditions these week because that's all I've had and I wanted to practice with it. I'm meeting up with the local Audoban society tomorrow and likely will have the extender with me, but won't run it right out of the chute unless I feel the conditions are accepting of it.

Huh, I knew about the stop changes with the extender, and that the body took care of/recognized all that automatically, but I had no idea about the "only center point focus" with the extender. That seems like a bummer. I often find now that I rarely want my subject centered (even in the cases of birds, etc.) and want to have more frame "in front of them" so the viewer can move them through the frame.

I'm sure you've looked into this more than me (since I don't have an extender and am on a whole different system anyway), but are you sure that it's locked to the center, and not locked to "a single region/zone/point"? As in, could you say, only autofocus to a point in the 3 o'clock position, or 7 o'clock position? That would still be limiting, but would allow for more compositions where you don't want the bird to consume the full frame.

Or, maybe the idea is to have center focus, and then crop in order to not have the subject be centered?

As I understand it it is limited to center point. Generally the composition can be made in post processing. I can't recall where I found it, but it's what I had determined, with the 7D I only have the center point. Again, one of the compromises. But in the right situation where I need the reach it can be a perfect tool for the job. It's a tool in the toolbox.

Ah right I remember this now. We have an 800mm prime and an extender for the RED camera. Same situation.

I think by design the center point is the "strongest" of the AF points which is why they do it. Slows down the AF a bit too but yeah, just par for the course. If I had $20,000 to burn I would just get the 1200 lmm lens from Canon and ignore the extender haha

Yeah one of the guys who shoots at tippet has either then 800 or the 1200. But he's a pro so I'm sure it's paid for itself. But means he's stuck too on the 5d as he has soooo much invested in glass.

But yeah center focus is most accurate.

Don't worry about that on our red as it's a film camera and we never use AF.

The EF glass works just fine (and at full frame) on the RF bodies, with an EF-RF converter (which doesn't have the same limitations as the extender, but does mean you have that extra little converter to deal with).

hm I thought that RF lenes were made due to the shallower mount depth of the sensor and old lenses could no longer be used due to that.

Yeah, I thought so too originally, but not the case.

This is a good video (if a bit long) that shows how well EF glass can work on an RF body. Pretty amazing to watch the autfocus work just as well as my native RF lenses, and no f stop loss: (1) CANON EOS R5 R6 Adapted EF LENS Test...does it work??? - YouTube

I think it has to do with the fact that EF bodies are naturally larger/deeper than RF bodies, so the EF-RF adapter essentially "fills in" that space, putting the EF lens at the same distance to the RF sensor that it would have been natively on the EF body.
