For me, I got into it by accident. I was recently out of work and basically just working on our ranch, when a friend popped by to camp. He saw my vehicle at the time and knew of my photography background, and knew OnX was looking for quality people at the time - so it all basically clicked. I leaned into it, and now I'm one of a few that gets assigned projects and areas to map. Ironically, this has led to mapping for the BLM, and other agencies as well, camping remotely and planning more trips deeper into the backcountry. As far as the undocumented or non-existent trails - that's precisely what the BLM had us doing. They didn't know what was on their land, so we went and mapped it for them. The last one was basically all the BLM from Yuma to Gila Bend, and then Ajo to the border.

I mean, I use Gaia all the time too, and love it.

My point was more about the pre-planning, and adding some spontaneity to your trips.

We had a talk about this around the campfire with propensity to use paper maps otherwise I just follow the guys with "tracks". I am looking into Gaia just for the ability to determine what land I'm in, but to define the trip ahead of time. Most of my mapping on the front end is studying Google Earth and going off memory when on dirt.

Agreed. I never map out my route beforehand, at most I might put waypoints out for key intersections or roads to take, points of interest, etc. I run the track as I’m going so I can find my way back though.

Something that bears considering is some people do it for work. When I'm out on a pleasure weekend with my friends, its very rough and open ended, and I never plan the route...

I plan stuff in a way to make sure there is a way through. Other than that. Take side roads all the time.

Totally a fair point, my brain struggles between knowing what I'm getting myself into for financial and schedule safety, versus just picking a spot on a map and seeing if I can get to it or not.

That said, it is frustrating when you think a trail is gonna be there and it's not, I'd be more interested in removing trails that don't actually exist, although finding those forces you to figure out another place to check out I suppose.

@Digiratus we must have had a good tailwind up from SLC in March, just put diesel in and was averaging 13.9, a new personal best!

@Blackdawg any update on memorial Day trip? I guess all I need to know is when and where to be to start.

I suspected this was the case. I do not typically get 18.5 mpg.

On the topic of camping, can you still do an extra day? Like camping somewhere on Monday night before before heading home on Tuesday? Zane indicated he'd be up for that.

Lets meet at Monte's house on Friday afternoon before Devin gets home.

Only explanation:laugh: at that pace I had another 300+ miles of range but boy am I too paranoid to push it so I filled up ahead of this weekends trip somewhere local here.

I took the Thursday before. I guess I could look into subbing in for a day in the backend instead. My plan was to head towards red rock lakes wed night after work. I'm flexible though, so if I take the Tuesday instead I would still head to RRL on that Thursday night.

The extra day at the end suites Zane's situation better. He said he's already feeling a sick day coming on. :bananadance:

And RRL would work for me. There is a lot of unexplored places around there. But I suspect you are looking for avian opportunities.

Let me see about moving days around then.

It may be too early in the season to go north of there. Long ago I did that route with that one lady with the white Tacoma. It's gorgeous up there and worth a look around again. But yes my plan would be to head there, do some sunrise exploring in foot then continue up to montes place. Would you be interested in meeting up there?

    This Lady?:angrygirl:

Not sure where the "there" is that you are referring to is? Is it for 'going' part of the trip? My plan is to go to Zane's on Thursday and together he and I will go to Monte's on Friday. For us it should be easy to get to Monte's by 4-5 ish

@Blackdawg Is Devin's getting home from work still going to be the limiting factor for when we can head towards Bridger?

yeah. Just show up. haha I can share the Gaia map I have which is pretty minor. Did you end up getting Gaia?

We've done most the roads there already so really it's just caves marked and deciding the route when we get there. Well, I've done all the roads. You guys haven't. So could be a new route or two for you all. But overall just gonna be hanging out and doing some walking to find caves and stuff.

yep. She should be done by 5:30 i think. Or she might even not have to teach that friday. Can't remember. Will ask. Should be easy to get the base and a camp spot before dark.

    There would be RRL.
No, I need to probably get on that. Order the radio and the awning parts I need to this week. Like I said I just put diesel in the van since our trip.... I've been slacking.
