I got the (original) R5, so now I have the R6 and R5. (They just released the R5mkII, which is apparently an amazing beast.) Was comparing to the 5DmkIV b/c I thought that's what Ben had now.

I did this last trip with one lens on each body, hoping that would be a lot nicer than having to carry/swap lenses, but it turned out to be rather inconvenient - storing, shooting, and transferring photos to the computer. So, not sure I'll keep the R6... we'll see.

I never really thought about lenses taking a bunch of battery, but you're right that of course they do, especially as you get into the big ones like yours. I think you could easily get several hours out of a battery (I can easily get a full day, often two), but it's still way behind the DSLRs. The problem being that on the DSLR, the battery is just doing the lens, where on the mirrorless, the EVF is sucking juice like it's a black hole.

I just want the next season of Clarkson's Farm. With the Lambo tractor. Bummer that Kaleb won't be on it.

I Have the 7D Mkii. I wanted the cropped sensor for extra "reach" for my type of photography especially since i started i just had the 100-400 and NEVER could see myself forking over the money for the big boy. It also supposedly has superior AF capabilities that drew me to it. It certainly will fall behind your RX in terms of ISO performance, but it hasnt been limiting me yet.

Hmmm, i have actually been considering picking up a second body, the 5DmkIV. It is such a pain in the ass bouncing to and from the 600 i think i would rather just keep the 7D mounted and then have the full frame for the other glass. Can you tell me about your workflow that you found a struggle? In my mind its two seperate memory cards that at the end of the day i transfer from both cameras to one single folder on the PC and then you're done, process as usual. I am wondering if i am overlooking something. Granted the pain of swapping the lens is significant enough that it wouldnt take much to suck less.(For perspective, you normally hold the body and turn the lens to lock the lens in....with the 600, you turn the camera body, not the lens to lock in place because the lens is too unwieldy to do it the normal way..

It is my assumption, that the bigger the lens, the more glass, the bigger the motor and energy needed to move it thus more battery draw, especially when running IS.

Wait Kaleb isnt on the show in the next season?

For me, the PITA was different than you; I think in your case, two bodies might be great. Here's what I didn't like:
    1. My camera bag was designed for 1 camera and "some stuff," on the order of 2 lenses plus some batteries, etc. It has a fixed spot in the truck that it sits, so I can't really change the bag. Adding a second body meant that the bag was really cramped, and it was hard to get them in/out. At least, harder than when there's just one lens with a body on it.
    2. Hiking - I thought it'd be nice to carry two bodies and just pull out the one I wanted for a given shot. I used to carry the body+1 lens on my hip (holster), and a second lens in a pouch on my lower back. Unfortunately... -->
      1. I Can't put a lens+body in the lower back pouch, so it has to go on the other hip. With a camera on each hip, it's hard to swing your arms (hike) without hitting one of the cameras.
      2. Also means that I've often got both hands occupied while hiking, keeping the bodies on each hip from flopping too much.
    3. In the "first world problems" bucket, having two great bodies, but one that's definitely better than the other, I wanted to use the R5 body as much as possible. So, I constantly felt like... "I'm in no rush, so I should just swap the lens over," defeating the purpose of two bodies.
    4. My more versatile 24-240 "walk around" lens is the lesser quality lens, so it felt bad to have the 15-35 2.8L glass on the "lesser" R6 body.
    5. Workflow - copying from two cards at the end of the day is twice the work of copying from one card.
Rest of the flow is identical, so no trouble with the processing side.

Some of those problems (3 and 4) would go away if the bodies were the same. The others, not so much. I do have some ideas to solve #2 by sewing my own custom hiking belt solution, so we'll see if that goes away with time.

And yeah, no Kaleb. Got famous (and probably "rich") and on to bigger and better things. At least, that's what I've heard.

Ah ok that makes a lot of sense. I have the "third" body for hiking, a rebel with a pancake lens. So light and no lens to knock around so im covered there. And i have a pack for JUST the 600 lens (the hard case is a pain) so it sounds like the two big gripes really wouldnt impact me as it wouldnt impact my current bag situation (fits everything BUT the 600). And yeah i feel you on doubling the work load, the whole 2 minutes to transfer  Hmm. ill suffer for a while longer until money settles down with the move and get the tires on the truck before pulling the trigger. For $1500 the 5D seems to make a lot of sense - although there would be comfort of familiarity by getting a second 7D.

He did write like 2 books. Probably has enough dough to raise his own family and run his own farm without much hassle now is my guess.

Still will suck. He was great and didn't give two shits who Jeremy was.

I'd bet we'll still see him. Just not as much.

Yeah, I totally don't blame him. Would be cool if he stayed on just for shits and giggles though, since the interactions between him and Jeremy were awesome. I mean, if neither of them need the money, that's the perfect way to do a show like that. Still is work though, I suppose and he could certainly have other interests/things (kids) taking up his time!

Well something broke in my fuel tank, the needle on the dash is bouncing around as the gas is sloshing around in real time  so I know sorta how much fuel it has... Not sure what the deal is.

The sending unit is sending signal in real time. Normally when you come to a stop you don't see the needle moving up and down a quarter tank in both directions and then slowly settle once the gas stops sloshing. It should smooth out the signal so the needle only moves slowly over time.

My bad. Poor reading. I thought you'd said "someone broke my tank".

That'll be a pain to fix.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
It's actually a failure in the gauge cluster not in the tank.

Felt like the engine was off, throttle response was slow, power felt down and I could feel the engine at idle. Listening to the exhaust it didn't sound right, but now CEL. I had a hunch it was the ignition system, and sure enough when I opened it up....
    PXL_20240928_190839571.MP.jpg

Replaced everything and the engine is silky smooth and making great power again.

Still needs alignment tires, rear suspension sorted, and I suspect I have a front wheel bearing going out. The new driveline and spacing the CB by 3/4" helped but I still have a vibration in the wheel. But after years of neglect, it's nice that it's getting the love it needs.

Your right around the mileage where I had to replace all that too.

I probably could have troubleshot better and just done the coils, two of them looked to have compromised connections at the plug wires, but figured it was not going to hurt anything to just replaced it all. Wasn't going to hurt anything and hopefully was the source of the engine feeling off.

Exactly. It's pretty cheap for parts so not a big deal.

Put in a short throw shifter and I am not certain it's going to stay... I'll give it a bit but the throws are super notchy, takes more effort to shift, and shifting out of 4th seems to hang up a bit. Hmmm.

Which one did you go with? I put the LCE short shift kit in and took it out a week later. Super notchy, felt like I had to force it into gear sometimes, made it easy to miss shifts, etc.
