Totally, I thought the weather was great last time. I just know that I'm going to be in a "let's be warm" mood is all I was saying.

Funny about NPS, I had no idea they checked vehicles. Send them some pics from the Montana trip going through the trees and up that steep hill after we had to turn around, lol. Certainly as capable as Will's Tundra, and it's not like White Rim is all that technical anyway. Speaking of which, don't forget the fire extinguisher .

Well thats the defining difference between the truck and the van. You're certainly more "in the elements" with the truck, it's harder to escape the cold, so I don't blame you. I was looking at the north rim but I am still waiting on some tracks from @Blackdawg ... But I saw white crack was open so I snagged it.

Yeah there was a stink about it last year that the NPS was putting requirements on certain vehicles in certain areas. Rescued to many Subarus I suppose as they seem AWD not approved for certain areas even. I sent them a picture of it in the trail in Utah... And it resolved it instantly. There's only a couple spots that could be interesting. The initial climb up Murphy's hogback, I recall a bit of erosion there and it looked worse than it was. There's the overhang ledge on the north side of Murphy's that the NPS said has 10' clearance, which I am under but idk by how much, and then Shafer, if it's wet, might be interesting descending. Other than that I don't think there's anything in that trail that is an issue. Just pluck a long at my usual speed and enjoy the views.

I dropped the van off for its Dr appointment... Can't remember if I posted it here but I'm doing a whole bunch of preventative stuff just to keep it reliable in the trail.
Gas tank strap, one broke, replace both.
    Diff service F/R
    Trans service
Coolant flush, rad hose replace, new t-stat
Serpentine belt replace with idlers and tensioners
    Shift linkage adjustment
    Oil change
    Diag airbag light
And for shits and giggles muffler delete.

Highly recommend switching to Shell Rotella ELC in the van if they are doing a proper flush. If its not running ELC already.

I want to go back to the North Rim and Alstrom point this year. Your neck of the woods. But in early September. Save a week of your PTO for that if you can.

Good to know and keep in mind.

And it is kinda in my neck of the woods, as much as Boise is in your neck of the woods ;)

No reason for me to go to Boise any longer.

16 hours/1100+ miles to St George from my house. Northern AZ is your neck of the woods.

    I'm tempted. :spy:

As many times as I've been to Moab, I still haven't done the White Rim.

Not sure I'm ready to drive that slow, however. :p

Just take the bike, you'll still go faster and it'll be more fun anyway.

I'd love to bike it, but I would want to do it over a couple more days.

Its not so bad if you're in front. Just go to the next campsite at your normal speed. You'll have plenty of time to relax with a few beers that way.

:luvya: I think it'll be able to keep a modest pace. Plus it's not like there are long distances each day so it by design is a leisurely pace. Day one is 37 miles of dirt with a few stops along the way. Colorado overlooks(one hike, one drive), musselman arch, and whatever else is interesting. Day two is 29 miles of dirt with a couple stops as well, a hike to a big crack and a slot canyon. So not really a reason to rush unless you want to find some hiking along the way. Then out that Monday and possibly the hike out to the Fort Bottom Ruins time permitting.

You are more than welcome to join though, just let me know so I can add to the permit.

Years ago, my friends and I did white rim with 9 people, 9 mountain bikes and 2 Toyota trucks (we all took turns driving). we spent 4 days going counter clockwise on the trail. My bike rims were smoking by the time we got to the bottom near the Green River! I only recall one fairly technical spot for the trucks on our second day. it was a fairly large step that I ended up ejecting about a third of the bed contents in my truck, crawling up it. Obnoxious to clean up, but no real harm done. There was also a pretty long descent that I thought 4 low was very prudent to use.

    Have fun, folks!

I gave Ben the KML. You're welcome, hahaha.

The rain in Oct sucked, but I want to feel like it's not always that way...because the color on the trees was amazing. I'd want to go when we could experience that color again.

I've heard this music many times before. Maybe it is time for a new tune. Or maybe you guys should go when it's cold and rainy/snowy.

Now that I think about it, maybe late August might be an even better option.

To many "or"s; need more "and"s. As in, we should do a trip in August AND October, hahahaha!

I mean, I am about to head down to Toroweap on Tuesday, so it's gonna be cold.

Hopefully not snowy, that would throw a wrench in things. Apparently GCNP is now giving out hefty citations for driving on muddy roads.

That's one thing about mild trails they can pull you into a sense of comfort and then hit you with a doosy without warning. @turbodb did the same thing when we ran f on a blizzard in the maze!
It's ok. I only called and begged for them.
    Thank you!
