Don't sweat the markets. I mean, you've got 4 years of "oh my god, is this real life," but hopefully post that, we get back to the predictable/stable upper management. Hanging on through those downturns - in the long run - has always proven out in the past. It will in the future. The only sure way to lose is to sell low as long as you're in the market as a whole (vs. individual securities). And of course, dollar cost average; keep putting in more money as it goes down!

 

I have a 401k account from my time in Idaho that I am trying to protect, the new one is less and left to its own devices. I guess I'll find out soon enough if that was the right choice. While there's fear monger and bias out there, I saw enough today to warrant trying to protect what I have for the time being.

I will say it is more than fear mongering for 4 years across the board, just be aware that things are in motion for defunding public lands, then comes claims lands are mismanaged, then turning land to the States or selling it outright. My senator here is very outspoken about the possibility of this. Last time it was Bears Ears. Who knows what is targeted next.

 

Ok I'm gonna put it in stone that April 26- May 4th. There's been enough time for folks to say otherwise. Now we can focus on the route.

There's all kinds of crazy shit that's going to be tried. Some will happen. Hopefully a lot (like the land stuff) will get caught up in courts for the duration of the time that it matters and then abandoned when new administrations take the reins.

From the money standpoint, remember that there are a lot of people with a lot more money than us (and by extension, a lot more power/influence, and a lot more to lose), who will not want to see their market wealth wiped out. When/if it starts to look that way, a lot of things will change (very) quickly to put the train back on the tracks. (We all saw what happened with bank/investment firm failures, etc.)

You might feel like you "saw enough today," but that's very short sighted. Year-to-date the S&P has lost 0.5% as of today. From its ALL TIME high, it's down 4.89%. That's NORMAL. Market moves of 10-20% are NORMAL.

Remember the "craziness" that was the housing market/bubble in 2008? It's a blip. COVID in 2020? Non-event; heck, it was a smaller dip than the first half of 2022. This is all just normal stuff.

Well at least that's been the norm. I suppose there's a chance for an all out wipe out crash and implosion. But at that point retirement funds won't really matter anyways. Ha

Exactly. At least, until you get closer to retirement age. Once you're within about ~10 years of retiring, it's a good idea to start moving to less volatile positions to protect some wealth.

But for you young guns, dollar cost average into the broad market indexes (or target date funds) on a regular basis regardless of what's going on in the world or with the markets. There's no 30 year period in history (including the great depression) where that turned out to be a bad strategy.

Sounds like propaganda, It's entirely too late. I should have been buying real estate and investing when I was in third grade. Instead I was learning multiplication and American history. Bunch of useless garbage.

Well the good news is i can text you via the Garmin and tell you exactly where we are, so that isnt a problem.

I am aware that up and downs are normal and that long term trend is indeed up. My account has basically had no gain/loss since i started contributing to a different on last fall, so it seemed like not a bad idea to push pause, or attempt to, and see what happens the next couple months.

Also i was too young to understand/remember the 2008 slump, so it is hard to compare to that. In the end i HOPE I AM WRONG, but i dont have a rosy outlook on things.

April 26th is a Saturday and would be a travel day. But i live only a few hours away so it is easy to get there in the early afternoon.

 

I should be able to meet on the 26th as well. I will travel on the 25th a bit too
