    Yea..

But Toyota diffs are a bitch. Fronts especially.

Not impossible tho. I'm planning on doing my own too.

Hmm, looks like I need to keep looking around then. Thanks Mike.

I have been looking at write ups and videos. Doesn't seem that hard but not exactly a walk in the park either. Mostly time consuming. Ill keep asking around and see what other shops have for pricing. I guess the cost of the specialty tools are actually pretty cheap. I might just call up a bud in fort carson or even ft riley to see if they want to house me and take me into a hobby shop in the summer. All the tools you could ever need and mechanics there to help you. Only like $10 a day.

I haven't looked into the front install yet.

Toyota diffs are notoriously picky and finicky to set up just right. Fronts are hard a fuck as they are clamshells so the housing holds the whole thing together. So the only way to check backlash is via mark paint and look through the diff fill hole.

Maybe thats why I haven't seen any write up or videos on it yet. I would still prefer a mechanic to take care of this mod. It's a lot of money on the line and I would hate to screw it up.

Yea I trust no one in riverton to touch my diffs especially the front. I'd be doing the core swap like brady did if I did the regear, plus then i've got a 5 year warranty. expensive but you cant put a price on a truck that you know will be reliable...

To add to what Marc just said, Why not just do like I did and have East Coast do it and then you just swap the diffs yourself? They are simple to swap.

When all was said and done I paid less than Mike did though I did have to do some of the labor myself, but with East Coast you know your gears are done right and you have a warranty.

Though if I were to do it again, I would just have East Coast set up the front and I would have Konsta help me do the rear. He has all the tools plus some other home built tools that are pretty sweet. I watched him do Mark's last weekend and it seems simple enough, though there are a lot of stupid little things to think about along the way that he knows. Though he's done enough of them he could figure out the backlash just by feel. haha It was pretty awesome when he was doing it by feel and stuck the gauge on there and was right. haha But even as skilled as he is, he said fuck the clamshells. He can do them, he just put new gears in his front a couple months again, but he said they are a pain in the ass.

Because the way they keep price down on their assemblies is by giving the same discount they are giving the group buy on parts. Then price in labor and you have to pay shipping. I probably won't save much if any. I just won't have to do the work. It's also nice to just break up the purchase. Ill be buying the parts and I can install them at a later time. I won't have to tap into savings this way and expect myself to pay it back.

Plus I don't have a Konsta around to help me out when need be .

Called a few more shops and was quoted $700 from all of them. Which, at $350 per end I guess its fairly normal pricing. The interwebz says to expect 4 hours for each diff so about $80 an hour. Maybe I can set a lower flat rate in person. Then its just finding a company to stand behind their work and offer a warranty period. I can install the compressor myself as well and that might drop it a little bit.

Nope, just the rear. I was only going to do front if the one locker on craigslist would work and was cheap enough. Jeff said it wasn't going to work.

Hey Jeff. I got some info from Bob who is on 4.56 and 33's at the moment. He is also a 6 speed like you and I. On the GPS when he's going 71 his rpms are 2864 in 6th gear. I was out today and that is almost exactly what stock gears and 5th gear does at 71 (2780). So basically all your gears just jump down one.

Also, i'm uploading video right now from the steadycam today

DO IT! Might as well. Probably won't get them cheaper unless you get them used off someone. You would have them waiting for you when you got home too .

 Can't wait to see it man. I am headed to the fly shop to get some last minute goodies. Heading out tomorrow despite the expected snow. Wyoming will not ruin my spring break :p.

When I said I beat out what Mike paid for his, that included shipping. I paid $2500 total for mine. $200 of that was shipping, $250 was the compressor, $900 was the front ARB and the rest (about $1150) was the gears/parts and installing them in the diffs, and that included solid spacers and all new bearings and such on everything.

As for installing them it took just a few hours with the help of a friend (not Konsta) to help lift the diffs in and out. Would have been nice if I had known Konsta at the time though because he has a lift and tranny jacks and stuff. That would beat laying on your back on the concrete trying to hold the diffs in place while the other person is hooking up wiring and starting bolts and stuff. haha Overall it's still pretty simple stuff to do. Mostly just loosening and then tightening bolts.

Well if I don't get the priced lowered any I am at $2415 for install and parts. So Ill be saving time and money. Do you get your old gears back from ECGS? I can sell mine to the 5 lug guys and come back even better :notsure:. Seems like a good deal for me. If I find a shop that backs their work then I won't have to deal with a business on the east coast and can support a local shop.

haha, yea the 4.56 really seems like the right ratio to go with if you're doing 35's to get back to stock ratio, but id go 4.88's if you want better trail manners with 35's.

Shots from today. Forgot to change the camera back to RAW so the second two are jpgs...
