    pinion bearings welded themselves to the housing....... whole new diff for me :(


    waiting for a call from scotty once parts get here and he has the new diff set up. currently driving a dodge :anonymous:
    if i wasn't working 50+ hours 6 days a week i would.

    Any idea why that happened? Seems very unusual.

    Do you have a diff drop installed?

    according to scotty the only reason that could happen is low gear oil or no gear oil. yes, diff drop is installed. i know i filled that thing plumb full when i installed it though. so i'm a little perplexed.


    I trust scotty though so if he says thats the only reason that would happen, thats what happened. maybe i lost some oil along the way somewhere..... i don't know. just kind of a raw deal all around. but he is working with me and were getting it all figured out.

    I would think if you lost oil, there would be evidence of that on your skid. :notsure:

    I mentioned the diff drop because the shop that did my gear install suggested removing it because it tips the pinion up in the air and has the potential to deprive the pinion bearing of oil.

    He mentioned if the oil was low or if the truck was in a prolonged nose down orientation, the bearing could be damaged.

    Not sure how much it tips it up. I have not removed mine but I did try to make sure I fill it up as much as I could.

    never put the skids back on the truck (in the process of repainting) so i couldn't tell, but i never saw any oil on the driveway either. essentially thats the same as what scotty told me but he didn't think the diff drop should make much of a difference and when i re-install everything, overfill as much as i possibly can.

    there was oil......

    i took it over to scotty the next day and he pulled the drain plug to see if there were any chunks. then i pulled it a few days later and still got plenty of oil out. the general consensus is that there wasn't enough oil to get to the top of the bearings since the bottom side of the bearings still move but its had to tell since scotty couldn't get the pinion out even with sledge.


    there is always the possibility that i didn't get enough oil in there or didn't let it "settle" enough to get an accurate read on the oil level. (i don't think so, but it's always a possibility i guess)
