I got a book on rocky mountain foraging on the way. Should be a fun way to pass some time in the hills. I have never been a big plant guy but it's easy calories and should be a nice treat to just pick up some plants on a hike. Not to mention pretty valuable knowledge to have.

My pack just gets bigger . I pack my bird field guide, my fish guide, and soon a guide on plants.

I can't wait to start cutting shit off Frank and putting new stuff on.

I can tell you about weeds.....non native mostly..lol

 

I can't tell you about much of anything other than sage brush or "that there is a tree, that is a flower, that looks like a weed, that one is poky so dont touch it"

Prospecting is one of my favorite past times. I spend a fair amount of summer time looking for gold. I have a little. I sell prospecting supplies out of my house to help with buying new equipment LOL

 

I got my mom a gold panning kit for xmas since she is into rocks and such. I might have to pick myself up one now. It would be fun to do. Not sure how much money you can get out of it but if I could make $20 camping, that's $20 I didn't have before.

 

Won't be for long. Sure as hell won't be in the dirt now.

I love my weed job. But hate it too. Cause now I see invasive weeds all over and go NNNOOOOOOOOOO haha

Yes prospecting is fun. At least you have the right idea. Some folks think that buying a pan they should be making hundreds in a few hours. Heck many weekends I came home with nothing except memories and a nice relaxing time. And to me that is why I do it. I went for 7 days to a gold camp in Nome Alaska a couple years ago. Talk about a kick ass adventure. My buddy and I went together. Came home with about an ounce of gold each. Which we really got in about 10 hours of work. I am also the VP of a prospecting club in Lincoln MT. Not sure how they wrangled me into that LOL.

 

Is there legalities involved? I would hate to just pan for gold somewhere on public land and walk out with a fat ticket .

 

And an ounce!? Isn't that 1k+ when sold?

 

Yea when we were up in Alaska gold was at $1800 an ounce. You need to know where you are prospecting at. Usually Forrest service land or BLM is ok but someone may have filed a claim. Which could get you into trouble. There are some places that are public claims. I usually just go and explore with a pan. If I find a nice amount (which has not happened yet) then I would check to see if the area has been claimed. In Wyoming these are the GPAA chapters. I am a member and work am able to work their claims for free as part of my membership.

What I always here from him re: billies is that they will start leaking and eventually fail from normal use. Hence the 2 year plan.

Sounds about right to me.
