Could have been frozen on. I know I just never use mine in the winter in wy because it freezes on all the time. Was annoying.

 

Mine freezes all the time and especially so after snow bashing. Usually you can just smack the bellcranks on the back of the drums to get it to release.

@m3bassman Was there anything just crazy difficult about taking them apart?

How far did you go taking them apart, did you just tear them down but leave the outside race attached to the axle?

Did you use the OEM re-boot kit?

Did you do the boot slide mod?

Yeah, the FSM doesn't say to do that when taking them apart. I was wondering if you even needed to. Would be harder to clean out, but I feel like it would be doable with enough parts cleaner. Then again, you wouldn't know if there was any gouges or whatever.

Yup, have snap ring pliers ready to go. Need to pick up the tool for the hose clamps still.

Did you end up beating out the outer tulip like Monte is talking about?

 

Yeah, to access the snap ring for the outer tulip you have to "hammer" it out. But, what's the point of getting access to that snap ring is what I'm not understanding I guess. Because at that point you already have access to both boots.

 

You have to remove the tulip to take off and put on the new boots right?

 

Only the inner tulip, which the snap ring for that is outside the tulip like this. Once you get the inner off, you can slide both boots off the open end you created by removing the inner tulip.

 

I'm not trying to do that. I know that wouldn't work haha

But if you already have the inner tulip off, then you can slide off the inner boot, then the outer boot. Then slide the new outer boot on large end first, then slide on the new inner boot small end first.

Cool. That was my thoughts exactly.

The only rebuild how-to's I could find weren't detailed enough to explain why or why not. But since the FSM doesn't even mention removing the outer tulip, I figure I'll just leave it be and clean it out while it's still connected.
