This is what I do as well.

I find the XBOX 360 a better system when it comes to gaming. There is a larger variety of games and the online community is larger if you like the multiplayer options.

The PS3 is a great buy. You get a solid blu-ray player and an awesome system that can support some pretty badass games. Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 are a couple of PS specific games which are amazing.

Since you kids are of elementary age I would suggest the Wii. There are a lot of kid friendly games out there for the Wii and they're not too had to control. A majority of us had Mario as a kid...it's a must have. Having bought all three consoles into my classroom(I teach 5th grade - 10-11 yrs old) I found that most of the kids preferred the Wii.

    That's my .02. Good luck.

EDIT: A few things to add. Netflix is a plus and is now offered on all three consoles. I have not used it with the Wii but I'm assuming it wouldn't be too bad; my bro said browsing on the PS3 was not as good as the XBOX 360. $9.99/mon for instant steaming + 1 DVD rental out at a time is worth it. Trust me.

About Kenect...while it adds a hands free addition to the XBOX it does not have a whole lot of games to support it. At E3 the best game they had advertised was the game where you dance to Lady Gaga. It looks weak so far. If I do get it for the XBOX I'll get it for the XBOX live browsing. As of right now, when it comes to the physical motion aspect which Kenect, PS Move, and the Wii have....Wii >XBOX 360. The Wii is proven in that area.

Will you kids grow out of it? It depends on them and what they get into. Either way, the Wii is fun times regardless of your age. If they seek to have one of the other two, there is nothing wrong with have both...or all three!

xbox all day long!!! I have the 360 and a wii, and the wii just sits there lonely. It is too boring in my opinion. I have been a pretty avid gamer since I was 8 yrs old and my first system was a Nintendo, so I am pretty tired of all the Mario games and what not.
the xbox is awesome, the online game play is 2nd to none, the graphics are better than the ps3, and there are more titles to choose from, as for me I am pretty stuck on MW2 right now. Who cares about a blu-ray player??

This is all great feedback. I'm learning a lot about these game systems. It's funny...just looking at the poll, the Wii is getting killed but it appears a lot of you that voted for one of the other two then said Wii is probably better for younger kids.

    Thanks again!

I voted for XBOX initially because I thought you were asking what I preferred...then I proceeded to read you original post. hehe

Wii if there are going to be young kids playing.
PS3 if you want BluRay, the most powerful system, and awesome (grown up) games. (I'll probably be getting a PS3 somewhat soon..probably right around when GT5 comes out :D)
Xbox if you only care about Halo.

As a young 52 year old I have a Xbox 360 and PS3. I use the PS3 for Blue Ray movies and GT5 if they ever get out. I use the XBOX 360 for FORZA 2/3. I use the computer for BF3 and COD (shootem up games)

Wii is great for the kids who just want to play random games. I'd prob get a Wii for now then xbox/ps for the more 'serious' gaming when they get a little older.

    GT5 = Nov 2!

I might buy a PS3 just for GT5, and hopefully they're make TT2 since they made TT after GT4.

The Wii is good for playing Super Mario Bros. The PS3 is the best Bluray player you can buy. The Xbox 360 is the best for games. I personally like the 360 but thats just my .02

For kids and groups... the wii is good.
for me, it's xbox only... that's because it's a windows media extender as well, allowing me easy access to my PC files (videos, pictures and music). In addition, I love the netflix interface, as well as the video on demand through zune. i wish it had a blu ray player, but i have a good one that has additional networking capabilities.

I have all 3. I hardly ever use my Wii anymore. All of my friends have a 360. Only reason I got the PS3 was for the exclusive games and to have a blueray player. Now I dont have any kids, thats why I voted for the 360, but I can definatly see the kids enjoying the Wii more than anything else right now. That might change once the Kinect for the 360 comes out or the Move for the PS3, but thats still a few months away.

Hear ya Go Daniel Here is why I vote Ps3.

    1. Even the ps2 is still running pretty strong(wheres gamecube and xbox @).
    2. Ps3 will take external hard drives so great for movies/music/etc.
    3. Netflix (yes the other 2 consoles have it as well now, finally.)
    4. Very Compatible with WIFI and syncing laptop and other wireless units to Ps3.
    5. HDMI for great video quality.
    6. Blueray Player
    7. Faster processing units

    • PS3 - PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz
    • Xbox - 733 MHz chip crafted by Intel
    • Wii - IBM Broadway 729MHz
    8. New Motion dection controllers ps3move(Don't get my wrong I love the Wii and its very family oriented games and motion detection but ps3 has it now 2)
    9. Video Quality output:
    - PS3 - 1080p @ most and its out of the box.
    - Xbox live - does 1080p but only @ a unscaled version and only
certain games will play @ 1080p.
    - Wii - is @ a mere 480p which is a good dvd quality.
    10. A great all around console. Almost like a PC ( PC FTW!!! )

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR DECISION. - Jeff

only true in that it's a blu ray player.

the xbox is much better at online content and a windows media extender.
