My local junkyard has a good xj front axle i can get relatively cheap and my question is would it be fine in my tacoma with 31" tires.
I dont go trail riding or crawling in this truck, i just use it for a work truck.
I want to do a sas swap on it as it needs a whole new front end and i could do this swap and sell my 6" fabtech drop bracket lift kit to make money back.
my other reason to do this is that i got stuck in a small washout in my back acreage and had to be pulled out.
Also would it hold up to tdi power? as that is what i will swap in after my v6 goes boom.

Just wondering here as i dont have much money to spend on this.

I know these are weak axles but i want to know if one will hold up in my truck. Or what other common axles will fit in my truck that are a similar width to my current trackwidth.

You don't have much money to spend but you want to solid axle?

In your personal opinion, how much do you think a solid axle from start to finish cost? Nothing fancy, just a very basic setup.

Depends on what year XJ. The high pinion Dana 30 from late 90s XJs are plenty strong to run 35s locked given you install chromoly shafts. I've run the Rubicon many times in my 99 XJ equipped with the high pinion 30, 5.13 gears, Spartan locker, and 27 spline chromoly shafts.

I dont know what year it is but there are 2 of them in my yard to choose from.
Could you tell me what to look for to tell if one has the good axle?

tons. Dana 44 would be a better option. For a little more cash you can buy tons for cheap and have them cut down.

How much money do you have to spent on this swap? Don't say a few hundred buck.

Would a cherokee pioneer or laredo v6 jeep have a better axle?
    Is there even a difference?

I am only considering this as my local yard sells me stuff like this at little to no profit because they like me.
And i can make most of the conversion parts i would need for this.

I think what needs to be said here is this -

Stock setup can handle 35s even, if you don't drive like an idiot and actually know what you're in traction-no-traction situation.

You don't revolve a solid axle swap around the initial cost of an axle housing itself (whether complete or not) as those can be found cheap depending on what you buy.

Do you have the means, financially, to accommodate such a custom build? The simple question asking how much you can sell your stock components raises a red flag already. Hell, someone doing an SAS would normally shelf those extra components, or even give them away (or sell for cheap as an afterthought).

Second, do you have the ability to perform such a swap? Trail gear offers many "kits" (which like any other TG items, requires custom fitting) for solid axle swapping a Toyota with Toyota axles.

You're going with a Dana 30 which by itself is already a poor choice. You'll need to fab up many of your own parts, figure out suspension geometry and more (assuming you're going linked).

Really feel like you're trying to bite off more than you can chew.

I'd rather be wrong and you fulfill swapping this thing but nothing inspires confidence in your posts.

    The OEM variety.

Are you a Prerunner or 4x4?

Trying to understand this whole goal here.

The D30 will have a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. You could look for a Grand Wagoneer front axle. Those were D44's with 6 lug. I want to say somewhere about 1983 they swapped from passenger to driver side pumpkin.

If you're set on a D30, some years had vacuum activated 4x4(or something....as I had a TJ) and will need a plate welded over it. You could also look for ZJ/YJ/TJ D30's. Those are low pinion as opposed to the high pinion XJ's

    This kills the conversation.....
Solid axle for 31" tire. Dropping a boat load of money, time, and semi/custom parts to be on 31"?

Guys run 35 to 37 with the POS tacoma IFS. Hell, I rather run the mini over the d30 anyday of the week if the mini was driver drop. At bare minimum, D44 with matching 6x5.5 lug.

You're asking so many different question.

Just because you have a SA don't mean you're not getting stuck. It's unless without lockers. For cheaper insurance, why not add a front selectable locker if you already have a rear elock? Front and rear lockers can is cheaper than a SA swap
