I hit the am/sat button and nothing? It has an XM antenna. Ideas? No display for XM at all.

Has it ever worked? Someone probably removed the tuner (if you bought the truck used) or it never actually came with it. My wife's Subaru has the button but it didn't work until I bought the tuner.

Duhhhhhh. Really? I had no idear.

Yea, I knew that. You shouldn't have to sign up to get something in the display showing XM. At least the owners manual does not allude to that. And typically if you are not signed up you'll just get a constant talking ad, but no channels. This shows no display for XM, nothing.

Ya... without paying for a sub, you'd get channel 189.
If the tuner is not responding to the XM button, the receiver is not in the truck.

Not sure how Toyota is set up, especially from 2006, but my Mazda had the button for satellite in it but I didn't pay for the option so the button didn't do anything. No receiver was installed. Might be the same thing you have going on.

You are assuming you already have a sat tuner. Sat ready isn't the same as sat installed, the head unit could be ready for sat but if you don't have the separate tuner you won't see anything. That sounds like your situation. I'm not sure if toyota has changed it but on the earlier 2nd gens they put the sat tuner under the rear seat on the drivers side.

Maybe read this thread for more info:

Maybe Canada's sat system isn't as good as the US system but I love mine and would never go back to standard radio. In tunnels and passing under bridges it cuts out but everywhere else its good. It's amazing for long trips, being able to listen to the same station for 500 miles can't be beat.

The further north you go, the worse it gets. I was supposed to move to Alaska and Sirius/XM won't let you pay for their services up there. They do get spotty reception though from what I've read.

My 2010 had the xm/sat button as well as shark fin antenna. But no reciever. Which was not a big deal foe me as I ripped the stock radio the day I got it. But I would rather use my Pandora than xm any day. Less intteruptions (none if you have a pioneer hu with app mode) and no need to pay for a service. Especially when you're already paying for data on your phone. Just use the aux plug in. Or in my case I have bluetooth streaming.

    Is yours factory?
I've always heard problems with the factory system, and replacement with aftermarket (and the XM-made receiver) is a big improvement.

My Sirius system was very bad... the XM that replaced it for my Kenwood HU is night and day better.

What kind of data bandwidth does Pandora use?

I'm still not running a Smartphone, but am considering it.
Thing is, my phone plus my wife's phone would be $80 just for the unlimited talk and text, then another $80 for 4gb of shared data.

The thread I posted has the equipment I used, it's aftermarket tuner with the factory shark fin. It works well but the antenna that comes with the kit seemed to work a little better than the Toyota one.

For the Pandora user, don't you have the same basic reception problem? I know with my phone and carrier there would be just as many of not more low reception areas as with Sirius.

Okay, ya... the XM/Sirius XM tuner is rock solid in mine.
I mounted the antenna to the top of my AC duct behind the HU and it's been working great.

But there have been a lot of complaints about the factory XM system, sounds to be as bad or worse than the Sirius system I had before (also a Sirius tuner)... and on that one I mounted the antenna to the roof.

That POS would cut out under overpasses, and even driving next to a truck or where the freeway lowered... almost like the Sirius sat is at a very low elevation.

I streamed Pandora for 18 hours almost non-stop once on a road trip. Used about 800-900mb if I remember correctly on the high quality setting. That's about 50mb/hour I guess, rough estimate.

My cellphone reception is great down here in San Antonio. Can stream Pandora without any issues.

Interesting. My Toyota service rep said I need to sign up first to see anything on the display. I'm not sure if she's correct or not from what's been posted here?
