Hey guys ive been lookin on the site about putting xm radio in my truck, i went to the place that installed my kenwood 6140 which supports xm and serius and they told me that i would have to put another antenna and a tunner in my truck that they cant just use the stock antenna since my truck was pre-wired for xm. Do i really need to do all of this of is the guy trying to get more money from me? Thanks for the help!

i think the 09s should already have a pre-wired anttenna. its on the roof towards the back. you will need to buy the interface and/or fit kit. depends on which service you do.

when i had my tundra i installed sirius in it myself and it cost me around $120 in parts. When i got my taco i had the dealer install it and i know the parts you need are the reciever and "fit kit". dont have a dealer do it though cuz its rediculously expensive which is why i had them include it in the deal when i bought the truck

but basically i cant just use my head unit to run the xm is that correct? i have to use an external tuner or did i just misunderstand the guy? i know my truck is pre wired for it he told me it would cost around 300 for everything

For some reason all the shops say the XM ant won't work with the sirrus tuner and try to install a 2nd ant. That said there are a number of people that have done it. If you do a serch for sirus install there is talk about a "shark fin adaptor" that allows you to plug the sirrus tunner into the ant plug that is hidden behind the driver kicker panel. I tried to tell the shop this and they just argued it wouldn't work, I finally made them remove everything as I didn't want a 2nd ant.

all toyotas are setup for XM meaning that the pre-wired antena is only good for XM service and signal.

you need the interface part to talk to the head unit. it basically sends the satellite signal from the antenna to the head unit.

i"m not exactly sure where the dealer put it. most likely under the consol or arm rest or behind the dash. when i did my tundra i put it under the consol but that had a ton more room than the taco

here is a link to the installation instructions. that should help you

But, you're running an aftermarket HU, correct? The fit kit and all this stuff is for the stock HU. You'll have to buy the Sirius tuner for Kenwood HU's, which will include an antenna with it. Perhaps they could wire in to somehow use the factory antenna but it's much easier to use the one that comes with it IMO.

My point is that an antenna for satellite radio is an antenna for satellite radio. It makes no difference if you use XM or Sirius regarding the antenna. So get whatever else you need, but the antenna will work for either.

For XM then you'd need the XM Direct 2 kit. Which is what I got for my Kenwood KIV-BT900.
