so had an idea last night.. a way to keep weight down and also gain clearance at the rear. not sure if its possible, but here's whats rollin around.

that Wilco vertical tiregate posted above + cut bedsides (race cut) and a simple tube bumper. Really just a couple pieces of tubing running horizontal right up under the tailgate where the bumper was.. matching the line that was cut in the bedsides. I can also have the receiver flipped/moved up higher into the horizontal bumper tubing.

like this kinda, but the receiver tucked up behind the license plate, and the bedsides cut at an angle to match the top tube. some other little things to clean it up too.

I like the minimal tube bumper idea.

Could still do a swing out off the bumper in some cases.

Tire carrier in place of tailgate would allow/need bedside reinforcement, while being separate from the bumper and contain anything in the bed.

would be nice a light thats for sure!

I would like to keep them separate, that way I can make changes, sell/replace one or the other if needed.

I'm thinking some steel plate along where the Wilco Tiregate mounts to the bedsides, with some gussets at the bottom corners (can also be extra tie down points)

Looks like you are onto something here. Wouldn't take much design work to incorporate the high clearance cuts on the rear panels and still get good clean lines.

The more I look at the Wilco tire gate you posted the more I realize that's probably the route I will go someday. Affordable yet very practical for my needs.

exactly. super practical for me. I just need it to carry my spare. plus a handy swingout fold down table. not to mention the weight savings and price.

I saw the rear of black Betty and looks similar to what your looking for. Just need to add a receiver.

I like the plates under the tail light.

look at you comin in like a fuckin rockstar! thats exactly what I want! I would add a second piece under it, and fill it with plate. maybe bring it out a little bit too and add plate on top for a bumper/step.

    kinda like this..

Now what you do is you make that bumper, but in the center you have a pivot area that allows a spare to fold up and against the tail gate, but when the gate opens it pivots under the truck/gate.

Drawing to follow after I'm done shitting.

they make those. they plug into the receiver and fold down. I'm not a fan, because then you have that to compete with under your feet. it wont fully tuck under the truck.
