    Hello TW,

So I was eyeing the Yakima Outpost HD bed rack system since it came out and before i bought my truck. I'm a big fan of yakima and I really liked the simple look of the bed rack as well as the height of the bars. With this product being so new, I wasnt able to find much info on it aside from a couple videos from yakima that was mostly just pitching it and how-to install videos.

I was finally able to purchase the rack system recently and am super pleased with it so far. I originally wanted the system just to hold a RTT. But after i started using my truck more and doing a lot more wheeling with it, I have found a lot of use mounting stuff to the bedrack. I went with the side rails on both sides so I can mount accessories on there. With the Outpost HD system being T-slots everywhere, its super easy and modular to mount anything. Except for when i was trying to mount the maxtrax recovery board mount directly from Yakima. The point of this post is to hopefully help some people out who are interested in this system, and to get more info on this product out there.

    The Issue:
With a short bed Tacoma, the Maxtrax are too long and tall to mount to the siderail of the Outpost HD System. (the Outpost is the lower, non adjustable version)

When Yakima shows this accessory in product shots, its either on a long bed Tacoma, or its with the Overhaul HD system which is adjustable, or both, as pictured:Screen Shot 2020-06-08 at 11.08.18 AM.jpg Screen Shot 2020-06-08 at 11.08.29 AM.jpg

With the short bed, the bars wont go wide enough so they can fit in between, and its not adjustable so i cant raise the bars for it to fit...This is all because the side rail mounts a little higher then middle of the rack.

    solution:
I did 2 things to make this accessory work with the short bed. Wide bars and custom brackets.

First, i set my bars as wide as they will possibly go. This means the plates in the T-slots in the bed rails stick out past the end of the rail, and the clamp sits on the edge. this is to make the most room possible for the boards.

Next, the goal was to lower the mounting point of the accessory so I can get the boards on there. To do this, I took measurements 1,000 times then 3D modeled some brackets on an iPad Pro and had them bent and laser cut at a machine shop locally. The brackets are very simple I just dont have the tools necessary to do the bending and cutting.

To give myself some wiggle room I designed the slots on the bracket face so i can raise and lower the boards as need-be to get them to fit. Hindsight i probably didn't need so much wiggle room but you cant even see it so its fine ha.

I went with 3/16" Stainless Steel since it rains a lot in Oregon, and I off-road a lot and didn't want any flex. these bad boys arent messing around. laser cut is crispy af.

Last step was to mount everything up and see how they fit. I used all the existing hardware as well as some new bolts. Image from iOS (1).jpg Image from iOS (5).jpg Image from iOS (2).jpg

and now time to throw the boards on and see how they fit! I was thrilled to find that my measurements were spot on and now everything is super solid and fits like a glove!

Over all I am super pleased with this setup now. I really like the Yakima Maxtrax mount with the velcro straps. its super fast and easy to grab the boards when you need them and they dont make any noise on the road.

Let me know what you guys think of this system and my solution. This was my first time 3D modeling and designing brackets. It was really fun and exciting and I am pleased with the results. Im curious what you guys think. I would also be more then willing to share my designs if anyone is in need of these brackets, and hopefully this post will help anyone in the future.

    Thanks guys!

Its a little annoying since its an all yakima set up and it should work out the box, but of course nothing is that simple!
and i had fun making the brackets

Nice write up and solution! I'm looking at the overhaulHD set up for my truck in the future but I'm waiting to get a deal (missed out on REI's Memorial Day sale on these). I would be looking for a way to mount fuel cans (nato or RotopaX) on the inboard side of either sidebar.

Some questions...Do you have plans on mounting things on the passenger side crossbar? Not sure how much maxtrax weigh but would the crossbars support heavier load? Is there a special t-slot nut on the inside of the cross bar track or did you use some standard hardware? Thanks!

Ya you can mount on the inside and outside of the siderail. Yakima makes a rotopax bracket for the siderail and i mounted a water pack on the passenger side with it. it works really really well. I also mounted a waterport on the inside on the passenger. But after 3 trips with it on there it just wiggles around too much and loosened the bar up. So im going to move the waterport. the bar handled the weight no problem, but the way the waterport mounts made it wiggle a lot. Next im mounting a hi lift on the other side of the maxtrax.

Its kind of tricky finding hardware that will fit. But i use a mix of stuff just whatever fits. I have hardware from rhino rack that fits in there too.

heres a pic of the rotopax.

great post. I also have the Outpost HD rack on a short bed. I also mounted mine as far apart as possible removing the rail plastic end caps and sliding till it wont go anymore. I have wanted the side rails but was not sure if the long vs short would be adjustable enough. Looks like I need the long!

I would like your bracket plans if i can get them made locally.

Do you have a link to the rhino rack hardware that works?
    The setup looks great!

I have the Yakima overhaul so the height is not an issue for me. But the length of the Maxtrax is definitely a problem for me as I have a DCSB. I see that you stretched the bar to the point where the clamp metal plate sits a little outside the bed rail but I don't know if I can do that because I am carrying a 150lb RTT on the bed rack. So far I mounted my Maxtrax as best as I can using the slightly shorter length between the mounts but it is a bit wiggly so thinking about adding some velcro straps to tighten down mine.

If you're still willing to share your designs I would really appreciate having them. I didn't realize this would be an issue when I bought my Outpost HD rack.

I actually ended up moving my setup around and no longer using the brackets. I would be willing to ship them to you if you are interested in buying them off me. PM me!

Did anyone have dimensions for this? I'm running into the same problem and was going to find a local shop to make it as well. Tia!
