Just a fair warning to 2016 Tacoma owners. According to Yakima, the 2016 model Tacoma necessitated a redesign of their roof rack towers. This was a bit disappointing since I was hoping to only have to buy new clips for the Yakima system I had on my Tundra, but found out this was impossible. Being a canoe/kayak enthusiast, I decided to buy the new system, and since I had accessories for round bars, I chose them over the more expensive aerodynamic flat bars. While definitely a well made system, the round bars create so much noise at speeds beyond 45 mph that people tell me they cannot hear while I'm on my hands-free phone system. The humming sound is really distracting and unfortunately, the racks don't have the "quick release" system that the old Q-Towers had. Tools and time to put them on and off.

Just wanting to let you guys know in case you're considering a Yakima system. Buy the aerodynamic bar system unless you can stand a loud, loud humming while on the highway!

Did you use a faring? Mine round bars on my old truck were ruthlessly loud. A faring takes care of that noise though.

I like your post though. I have a DCLB coming next month and was assuming I could use the bars from my old truck. Oh well. Money money money

No sir, but I guess I'll have to do that unless I want to painstakingly install/remove the bars. $440 for a system that's driving me nuts. I guess I'll have to buy another $100 item to quiet it down.

Totally agreed. It sucks, but it's worth it. Makes it like normal. I couldn't hear myself think before I put it on.

I just spent a couple minutes on the Yakima site. I'm a little confused, since I have always used factory crossrails or runners. Based on the website, it looks like the naked roof clips are just j-hooks that go around the door frame. Is that right? Does anyone have a photo of what they have? I would really appreciate it.

I'm ordering a new DCLB soon, and want to know how I need to adapt my current yakima system of carry. I currently use round bars with a rocketbox, a loadwarrior, misc bike trays, landsharks and kayak J-hooks, fat cat, and even a set of bar covers for SUP. That last thing I want to do is redo this whole system. Its currently on a 4Runner and I realize that I am going to need a vertical bed support for the long stuff, but just trying to figure some of this out before I have the truck and need to load up for a trip!

If it weren't for the kayaks and SUP, I'd just do some lower, overbed bars, but I need the length for 16' kayaks.

    Thanks in advance.

Matt, I'm a little confused with your question. I had a 2007 Tundra that was fitted with Yakima Q-Towers and round bars. When I bought my 2016 Tacoma, I was hoping to spend $40 for a new set of Q-clips to use with the bars and Q-Towers I already had, only to find out that this year (2016) the roof design on the truck changed and this necessitated entirely different towers. PM me your cell phone number and I'll call you if you want more information.

I agree with @45er. I'm confused as well. But I too expected to change out my Q clips and move on with my merry self. It's looking like my wife is going to get a nice used set of towers and bars and my taco will get some new stuff... if it ever shows up!

Nevermind, I was being lazy and just posted the question. I went back and looked up the install instructions on the Q-towers and got my answer. I was confusing the Q-towers with the Control Towers. They have a quick disconnect, which would let me do everything I want, as long I install them in the right places ... I can just use the Yakima Tracks system with the control towers. Drilling into the roof sheet metal is dicey, but doable.

    Thanks.
