First let me say thanks for all the good info on this form. I am looking at purchasing my first Taco and this has really help me to learn about the truck.

What year did Toyota add the rev hang to the Tacoma? Looking online it seems this was introduced in the US vehicle market around 2005 to 2007 but I couldn't find anything specific to the Tacoma. If I purchase a truck with a manual I would like to avoid this feature if possible since I am used to driving vehicles with manual transmissions build before the 90's.

2005 for the Tacoma. Drive one before you decide against it, over 6 years with mine and I'd have done it again.

Thanks Landphil for the info. I am planning on doing that this weekend. Looking at trying out a 2007 and a 2010 with a 6 speed or a 2007 auto. There is definitely a personal preferences when it comes to the different transmission. The only way to know for sure is to try them out and see what you like.

On the manual transmission trucks, when you push in the clutch and release the accelerator, the engine RPM's stay up momentarily allowing you to match engine and vehicle speed more accurately. The ECM more then likely uses vehicle speed to determine how long it keeps the REVs up. It does take some getting used to but once you get it down, you hardly notice it.

I barely notice it in the 6 speed. In a 4-cyl 5-speed rev hang is considerable shifting from 4-5.

In any case it's not a big deal to get used to and it reduces emissions.

I use to have a 2011 6 speed. It is a little weird, but you do get use to it. Also consider there are some other possible issues with the manuals. I had a lot of issues with clutch pedal squeak and creak. Its a very common issue. Had one replaced under warranty and the 2nd started doing the same. There are some common bearing issues also. I ended up selling and buying an auto. The autos can shift hard but they are super reliable.

i don't notice it in any shift in the 5 speed. the only thing noticeable is when you are starting out from a stop in 1st. there is a slight delay due to the fly by wire system used on the throttle. it's not a game changer, takes a week or so to adjust.
