Recall to replace brake light or to apply sealant?

:) yeah man! I'm one of the lucky 16's. Had this issue a few yrs. ago - the DAY BEFORE I was going to seal it up myself after reading one of these threads, that night it poured like mad and it was in the shop hours later. Just got it back for a throttle body replacement.

I’m curious how they are doing it from the outside.

All I know is when I was watching from a distance I could see he was putting something that looked like a rubber seal over it from the outside and yes he did have a tube of sealant in his hand. I didn't go into the shop and couldn't really see exactly what it was as my truck was several yards from where I was standing. I really didn't expect them to do mine because I didn't think the 2019 had an issue. I was there for the fuel pump recall.

Strange that when I called the same dealership several weeks ago they told me they had never heard of this problem. I assume the recall has just been issued. I had them check the VIN on the 2017 TRD Sport that belongs to my son yesterday and they said yes now. Anyway as long as it don't leak I could care less.

They’re having us use sealant, then smooth the sealant and install a trim ring to hide it.

Honestly it seems like a piss poor repair and I’m not a fan of this recall

I thought the same thing. The only way to do it right is remove the entire assembly but I am sure cost would be out the top. They left some glue on my light because I just had to climb up there and look a while ago.

It’s a messy job, but to leave visible glue outside of the trim ring is just sloppy

Dropped mine off this am, just got call it's delayed. I had applied peramtex flowable silicon around the top that's the hold up.
Per service advisor waiting on district Toyota rep for solution an approval as there's 7 different fixes....
Service advisor not mechanically knowledgeable or well enough informed. Said they can use screw driver to remove it an scratch the paint if I'm ok with that.. I asked if plastic razor blade or adhesive remover was option, sorry don't know what that is. Keep in mind it's body shop on-site also.
Might be better off with my own fix.

Is there a replacement gasket I can buy that will fix the problem or do I have to buy a whole new assembly ? I don't like the sound of sealant and trim ring either .

New assembly is the only option I know of. The recall includes a new third if water damage is found and the headliner needs to be replaced.

the old TSB had us replacing the whole CHMSL

I've given it some thought about taking it in, but I really don't want silicone smeared all over the back of my truck. That doesn't sound like the appropriate way to "fix" the problem.

So, I ordered a new third brake (81570-04051) from eBay this afternoon. It was $76 with tax and free shipping. The seller goes by the name smoked_lights and has sold quite a few of these. Every Toyota website was in the $130+ range and this part retails for about $150. For $76 I think I'll take a chance and replace the entire light assembly myself. Here's the link if anyone is interested:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/284112164201?fits=Model:Tacoma&epid=14035825682

Also, here's the YouTube video I plan on following for the repair...

I did it. It looks harder than it actually is. Smart man for doing it the right way. Also, look on eBay. They sell just the gasket. I’m going that rout if it leaks again
