Oh you can also use that site to do fun things like find all the part numbers for an oem tundra brake upgrade.

Great write up, and awesome job on the build. I have been looking for a double cab for awhile, just haven’t found anything that I would be willing to pay for and then beat it up off roaring. I have been considering picking up a prerunner and doing 4x4 swap and possibly the manual swap. I live in Tucson, so I may have to make a trip to Phoenix and take a look at yours in person if you’re cool with that, and if that’s the route I end up taking. Thanks for all the info! Oh, and I’m a big fan of your red valve covers.

Sure man, I also make it through Tucson and that area somewhat often. Was just out that way a few weeks ago when I drove to Sierra Vista, AZ for my fridge and stuff. I can shoot you a message next time I am headed through if you haven't come by yet.

Absolutely. You drove from Glendale to Sierra Vista for a fridge? Not to take this off topic, but that is a bit of a haul for a fridge.

Yep sure was. Got a great deal on the ARB fridge and it came with the whole kit, fridge slide, mounts and canvas cover. Plus my GF did her AIT for the Army at Fort Huachuca and she hadn't been back in nearly 20 years so it was a good trip for many reasons. Only bummer was the caves out that way were booked solid due to covid so we didn't get to pop in and enjoy that.

Hah dude I could sit on this site for hours. Ive already racked up another $450 in a ton of small parts and bolts. Which that is including the $200 for the starter as well. After looking into it I am buying the same one you bought, and keeping my old one as a back up. I’d rather just replace it now since I’m going to have it easily accessible.

One more question lol, what paint did you use for the trans? I’m going to wire brush mine and figured might as well paint it too.

Nice! The extra dough hurts, but way less than having to tear it all apart and fix a leaking seal or worse yet it leaving you stranded on the trail.

I have been very happy with that starter so far. The rebuild was probably the best I've ever seen on a starter. I took it apart and put anti-seize on the screws that hold it together because the one I took off that had nearly 300k, was no way you were getting those out man.

Regarding paint it wasn't anything fancy. I got a can of high temp primer and a can of engine enamel in "aluminum metal finish" was the "color". It might not be exactly that but it will get ya close. Got both at an auto parts store I believe. Wire wheel is good, then clean up with either rubbing alcohol (hard to find these days) or the stuff made for prepping before paint. It's like a tar, grease and wax remover type thing. Do that after you wire wheel and don't touch it without gloves after.

It will come out sweet man :)

I figured it was something like that. I’ll take a look the next time I head to advance and see what they’ve got. Just didn’t really wanna use black, just feel like it will be easier to spot leaks or whatever on silver.

That's a nice write-up. Always concerning to start a truck after you've done 100 different repairs/jobs on it. I noticed you went with the CVJ CV axles and their high angle boots. Just in my personal experience (and a few other customers I've spoken with) the high angle boots seem to tear after about a year. Mine started tossing grease the same week I installed them a year later. I also park my truck outside which could be a factor.

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah I had read about that also. We shall see how it goes over time. I just wanted a good set to start from.

Ended up going the same route as you as far as rebuilding hubs. Been having a little trouble finding the correct locking hub studs, would you happen to know what size stud those are?

Hey man, I just finished up my swap this weekend. I can confirm that you can use the J-shift handle in either position. When I pulled it out I was apprehensive as to wether it would work because one side is notched more than the other but I tried it anyways and it shifts the Tcase normal.

Bro, stop it. You can do it, especially with the number of folks on here that have completed it and are more than willing to help. If there was no covid I'd fly up there this summer and force you to do it.

Honestly it was pretty simple. Started it on Friday and finished this morning putting on the drive shaft and filling the trans and tcase.
Also still waiting on heat shrink in the mail to wrap up the electrical but all the connections are made and just have to unplug and heat shrink Wednesday.
I have yet to take it for a test drive but as far as the the work it was pretty straight forward, even the electrical was easy with the diagram, hopefully it’s all correct haha.

I'd just buy a new (to me) ECU. That eliminates much of the electrical work and repinning, correct?

According to @osterhagen there is no need for repining. Which saves a huge hassle. For the rest of the wiring you can use a manual wire harness or just cut and extend the existing harness.

ECU and stuff is straight plug and play.
The only electrical needed is for the clutch start (depress) switch, the clutch cruise cancel(release) switch, and the reverse switch located in the trans. But it is so easy. It’s just cutting off the connector that goes to the auto, the one connected to the shifter on the trans. I believe it’s called the Nuetral safety switch or something, but just follow the diagram that was posted on here and put some connectors on and then match the correct wire to each clutch plug and reverse switch. It’s honestly crazy easy. Trust me, if I can do it you can too lol. I was so apprehensive about the electrical but with just swapping the ECU and just running some wires to the cab for the clutch connectors mentioned above, it’s a peace of cake.
I finally just took it for a test drive. Everything checks out and is working great. I’m telling you dude, stop waiting and just do it haha. And it really is just taking parts off and replacing them with new parts. I didn’t run into any funky stuff, other than not having a drive shaft that properly fits. The one from the donor truck fits but I had to pull out the slip yoke a little bit to make it fit.It feels great to finally have it done.

I will make a post on my thread soon and give a little more info on the electrical just to try and make it seem bare bones simple because it really was that easy.

    Hey folks,

Been a lot going on lately but I wanted to stop in and provide a more long term update.

I've now taken the rig on several adventures across all different forms of terrain and I am happy to report that everything is working wonderfully.

The only issue I've had is the crap silicone red boot on CV axles out of Denver on the driver side started throwing grease like 5k after install... of which most of that was 2wd. So I can say that I wouldn't recommend those as MANY others have stated on this forum also. Oh and I finally got the much known P0442 code...

Otherwise, regarding swap related issues there have been none. I will drop some quick pictures below and I hope to get back to working on the build thread sometime soon.

Day at the lake while getting the new co-pilot used to water and so forth.

Pic of the front from crappy phone... but little man was so cute with those big ears sticking out!

Bit of fun up north when we got some snow! 4wd worked great!

Recent trip to Kofa Wildlife Refuge. Too many stickers but otherwise a really cool place.
    PXL_20210131_001831090.jpg

Look forward to getting back into the build thread soon.

    Keep truckin'
