Yet another Tacoma brake upgrade to Tundra

    A couple of things I learned doing this conversion (231mm calipers):

    1. Before you open the hydraulic lines, unbolt one of the calipers. You should now be able to push the brake pedal to the floor and hold it in place with a crowbar. This puts the master cylinder in the closed position (reservoir volume is separated from the caliper/line volume). When I did this I didn't lose a single drop of fluid while changing the rubber hose for the new stainless braided hose.

    2. Bleeding is still a pain since there is a lot of air empty space in the calipers. I had to bleed several times to get a firm pedal and I will probably bleed again after a few days.

    3. The calipers don't come with bolts so I reused my stock ones which fit fine. I've heard some people say that their stock ones did not have enough thread so if the caliper body is thinner you will bottom out the threads before the bolt tightens. Maybe this is only a problem with the smaller 199mm calipers.

    4. Make sure you have a good 10mm line wrench. I got a new set for this job and they were really poor quality. The wrench was loose and almost rounded off my fittings. I ended up using a 10mm craftsman open end wrench which is not ideal.

    5. Make sure you check the range of motion for the braided line before you bolt it up. It is not intuitive but the stainless braided line will not rotate once it is bolted up. If you put a half twist in the line it will stretch/damage the line when the wheel droops.

    6. The EBC Extra Duty pads are sweet in every respect performance wise but they seem to be pretty dusty if that matters to you. I posted EBC about the comparison between the different formulas (green/yellow/ED) and this is what they said:

    To my knowledge the production department hasn't released any side by side testings showing a comparison. But I do have the specific test charts of each friction material showing it's friction coefficient at different temperatures. Of which the ExtraDuty pads have the highest friction level, and heat resistance. Let me know what I can further help with.

    FWIW I did a brake bleed on mine where you submerge the line in brake fluid and pump the brakes several times. Really helps clear all the air out quickly. As far as pads and rotors I went with OEM as Toyota pads are great as far as dust. Very little of it overall. I would recommend getting PC or some sort of coated caliper as some have the tendency to rust very quickly. The Napa eclipse calipers are a good buy, and you get the core cost back when you return your old calipers

    I think the whole mechanism is submerged in this type of thick ceramic coating (the website says it's "proprietary"). I've never heard anyone complain about them rusting.

    I thought I heard somebody over in the first gen forum saying that their napa calipers rusted pretty quickly, or maybe it was in one of the Tundra upgrade threads. Not sure what the 'eclipse' calipers are tho...

    Yeah they do, most of the "metal" looking ones need to be painted or coated before installation. That's why I elected to get the coated calipers.

    Most of them yes. I think there is a thread or a site where someone has tabulated all the ones that fit. I have the TRD Ivan Stewarts and they fit fine. I'm pretty sure my TRD 16" winters will fit too but I won't know for sure til later this year :D

    On the topic of wheel backspacing, do y'all happen to know what my wheels measure? I know they will clear the calipers no problem. I'm just curious. They are the stock 2001 TRD wheels. The ones on my truck in all the pictures

    These? They were what came on the '01-'04 stock. 16x7 with +15 mm offset. Ends up being a little more that 4.5" of backspacing.

    Did you have to cut away your dust shield to make room for the calipers?
