you know I'm not sure where mine was built but a lot of US market tacomas were made in Mexico also. The engines components are Japanese made and assembled wherever the plant for that market is. The engine may have even been assembled in Japan and shipped to be dropped into a car on a assembly line.
The problem is that the 3rz has a flood of Chinese made engines in the us market and china has issues with there metalergy and quality control so the integrity of components made in china are extremely low. The thing is that I so badly want that reliability that toyotas are supposed to have and my best bet at that is to ensure I get an engine with Japanese internal parts like pistons bearings and rings. I'm leaning towards a new rebuilt engine because the idea of a zero mileage engine is ideal for my plans to keep my truck for ever. Jdm is an option but I'd rather not since those engines have sat for many many years by now and the history of them is basically unknown.

Where did you get the head rebuilt? Have you mentioned it to them yet? How many miles ago was that? Idk man, it's too soon to be going through that again. Is coolant in #4 - it should smell like it.

That JDM place had the best reviews when I was looking to have a 3.4 installed. I ended up getting a good deal on my usdm w/ trans, bought an engine hoist and the rest is history lol

Adams metalizing here in Lancaster ca
Did the machine work but I did all the rest. I honestly have no clue how many miles Iv put on it since I didn't write it down but I beleive it was around 40k miles since I'm at 170k now and it was around 130k or 135k when I did the exhaust valves and it was done in 2012
And trust dude i know it's been hell with this engine. It's always been low on power that's why I think I'm just ready for a new motor. One thing I didn't do was re torque the head bolts after 500 miles so maybe it was my fault who knows maybe the head is cracked.

I think you're gun shy from this whole experience brother. Here's a list of used 3rz's. If you want to keep the truck forever save your money to upgrade the other stuff and build your new engine over time. That's what I'm doing. I have a block and heads that I'm going to make into my tricked out engine, but in the meantime I'll have this much fresher used motor to keep me going - I figure I can probably get 4 years out of it easily with the miles I put on a vehicle. Do what you gotta do man - not worth stressing about it when it's you who knows what's gonna make you happy with your truck! :)

    http://www.car-part.com

I'm sure you can find others with that site - I threw in 99 w/ a 3rz and it spit out compatible part numbers!

So I used that link and found an engine with 89.5k miles pretty close to me for $1,200 that's not a bad price but damn it's a lot for an engine if it goes bad on me. It says it's "tested" I called and they say it's been compression tested but they do not save the compression numbers and can't tell me the compression. Wtf? Why do the work and not save the info.

I'm still interested in hearing from someone who has an engine from yotashop in their truck But it's cool to have another option if I decide to just go the cheap quick fix route.

I'm even entertaining the idea of selling my truck the way it sits and getting another one with the six cylinder and a manual trans and 4x4. I figure the 4K if put into an engine on top of what I can get for the truck could cover the cost of another rig

You could probably make more parting out your existing truck. Yeah putting the money into a new truck with options you want anyway sounds good - I've seen some clean 5 speed 4x4 v6's go for less than 7500 around here so you'd be more than half way there and make some money back on your part out / vehicle sale.

Man a lot of people are asking a lot for their v6 5speed 4x4's. Found a decent one in Phoenix AZ but he wants 15,000! It's a 2001 with 130k miles. What do you guys think is a decent price? It's got a new timing belt.

As far as my truck goes I'm thinking I will just put the used motor I found locally in it because for $1200 I feel like that will make it easier to sell running and the difference in fair price for a running vs no. Running truck is more than $1200. And if I get it running it will buy me more time to search for the right 4x4.

So with the 2.7 having a manual transmission is the difference between a underpowered truck and decent power. Is it the same with the 3.4? Or is an automatic not an issue with the v6?

If you can drive stick I'd do that - unless you get an 03-04 that ovtune might be able to change the tuning for the shifts in the auto.

Alright I gave it a ton of thought and it's decided I'm going to get the used engine for 1200 and put that in and get it running for now with the realization that I'll be selling it. That way I'm comfterble not having a new engine since I'll be letting the truck go. I can drive it for the next year and get some use out of the lift and wheel bearings I just installed and save up some more. Than I can sell it and not get haggled down a shit load for it not having a drivable engine.

It's a good thing I still have the stock suspension so I can part out the lift to y'all here at a discount:thumbsup::D

Look for a rusty truck north of you that was parked because of frame rot. I got my 3RZ doner truck for $650 with 115k on the clock because it had rotted apart

I found an engine from the previous link you sent me in that exact same town and price...i think... at anjunk yard. I wonder if that is it? That looks like it's in someone's back yard though
Wish I knew what exactly the add said. I think 400$ for trans and 1200 for engine?
Do you think that engine is ok the way it's lifting there looking all trashed and not sealed? Could be full of crap in the intake and what not

There's a ton of dismantlers up in Sun Valley. Yeah - 138k on the motor, $1200 for the engine. You'll probably only be using the long block so I wouldn't worry too much about that intake. Looks like it came out of a wreck which is good.
