Just recently updated from OTT which just would not drive right for me!! Night and day difference. Blackhawk 2.1 is killer! Shifts are butter smooth. Gears hold just the right amount of time depending on how much pedal is pressed. Acceleration is smooth and powerful down low and high. I can’t stop putting miles on this truck now. Chris at tidewater customs was so amazing to work with.

A MEGA HUGE Thank You to Tom @805 Tacoma Tuning and Maynard @Mcbelen for their dedication and execution in handling the issue I was experiencing.

That’s the truth Tom. You and Maynard were patient, most particularly you in accommodating my needs. Time after time after time. Maynard crushed the issue where there was a pause (lull, hesitation, etc) going around corners. Now there is either progression or a strong super fast downshift for some great power depending on throttle position. Yes, the 3.5 can surprise the best of them now, albeit some for only a fraction of a second(s), say a big BMW V8, but for what this transmission is, Maynard has done a fantastic job with torque down low, mid-range madness, and some great ponies up top.

Yota Werx ain’t fucking around folks.(Thank you for getting off that high horse and complying to TW’s rules and requests!!!!!!) I would not have met Tom otherwise.

Now go rule the planet fellas because you’ll have a lot of quick equipped 3rd Gem Tacomas coming out of your ROOST:hattip:

I wanted to share this just in case, there was someone out there on the fence. Jump off and seek your local YW tuner!!!!

Huge thank you to @Mcbelen for such a stout tune I’m enjoying as time goes on, and @805 Tacoma Tuning for being a good guy and YW tuner.

So take this for what’s it’s worth. DISCLAIMER: My SR5 Taco rolls on 245’s :anonymous: About 100lbs of gear, and 3/4 tank.

Taken from Fusion(gps is shockingly damn close to accurate), the BH 2.1 AD+ allows the 3.5 and 6 speed to give the driver some fun feelings. Hovering at 17.7 or so on average for mpg’s flooring it like mad on the most recent tanks. Good gas mileage otherwise.

Great all around tune with STOUT torque for a quickie go from a stop with a heavy haul, trailer, or in 4LO. Cat like reflexes that quickly turns into a tiger!

And yes, it can be repeated. 2WD-76 Premium (with a quart of 5% Nitro/ALKY leftover fuel from the race season poured into a full tank…just kidding:0) One more logging show to go at White Pines at the end of this month. I was only concerned with 0-60, so that 330 was off some. Get it for the sake of the 2GR-FKS and them mini van smack talkers!

    Shiiiiiiit.

Smooth, harsh downshift coming to a stop is gone + Torque down low is finally on tap + Midrange is madness + The ponies at the higher range just want to keep going = One stoked 3rd Gem Tacoma owner!

This tune came late in the Tacoma’s life, but damn if it’s not a good thing for those who waited!!!!!

I'm currently on KDMax v10 and am just now learning about the acquisition. I've been happy with KDMax, but for some reason my mpg took a hit when I went from whatever version I was on before to v10. I'll reach out to my local tuner to see about a reflash to see if it helps.

However, I'm also curious about options going forward. I skimmed the last 6 months of this thread and didn't see a whole lot about if KDMax would continue to be developed or if it's only Blackhawk going forward. If only Blackhawk, what's the upgrade process if we have KDM?

Also, compared to KDM for those who switched, how is BH different, better, worse, etc?

    Thanks.

    Greetings,

KDMax is no longer in development as it has been acquired.
You will notice a power difference and torque improvement with YW Blackhawk.

reach out to your installer, I believe there is a conversion fee of $150 or $200

I worked with @Mcbelen to address the stumbling issues in 2nd and 3rd gears. Not sure why, but it took us five iterations to resolve it. Also improved the premature downshift from 4th to 3rd gear at zero accelerator, which now occurs in the 24-25mph zone. All these helped with slow speed driving. I had promised the opportunity to test the tune in the mountains and high speed conditions
While driving up long inclines, mt pass and against strong winds, I used S5 because 6th gear proved ineffective above 75 mph in hilly conditions. During this, I encountered the limitations of 5th gear: the throttle is capped at 36% at 2300-2400 rpm. When driving over rolling hills at speeds of 75 mph or more and beginning to accelerate, the throttle position sensor would reach 36%, yet the engine load would remain at approximately 90%. The ACIS was activated.

    1.upload_2024-8-27_18-48-1.png

The truck is not accelerating and losing the momentum(speed, rpms), causing you to apply more accelerator. The accelerator reaches 43%, yet the TPS remains at 36% and the MAF is around 70 g/s. The knock feedback then falls below -4, causing the KCLV to drop to 20. Continuing to press the accelerator meets the conditions for a downshift, not to mention that the downshift point is too high, and you would need to use the stick to force the downshift. 6th gear has same issue, by it does not take long to downshift.
    2.upload_2024-8-27_18-49-51.png

In my opinion, the load can be safely increased to 97-98% to maximize 5th gear performance.

I also see premature 4-5 upshift at around 20% of accelerator.

I think the tune is still raw and needs some work. The power is there, but is not delivered in efficient way. The tranny tuning was neglected.
Terrible mpgs, but I did know that already.

Upgraded to BH2.1 from KDMax 9. My thoughts after ~1000 miles.

GOOD: Highway performance is greatly improved, as is MPG. On a drive from Atlanta to Savannah I got about 20 mpg (at 80 mph) when I would usually get around 16 or 17. Power is more readily available when you need it (passing, merging). Shifting while accelerating is smooth and natural.

NOT SO GOOD: The downshifts while decelerating are rough and jerky, especially 3rd to 2nd while coming to a stop. I had BH2.1 reflashed but it didn't help.

The minimum downshift speeds with 0 accelerator are to high to those gears and needs to be lowered.

@Technique, my apologies brother, I thought I wrote to you. Chit. I’ve been enjoying the truck all over again. Truly and finally justified after all these years of a bad stock tune so much so I have not been logging on here. I’m one of the very few that would choose a 3G motor over a 2G motor too, so this tune was NEEDED. Being in tune with the truck and my saws is where it’s at for me. Like doing it all over again for the first time. Such great times with the V6.

Yes, Maynard offered a few variations and did a great job at it. And mind the rest of you, it was only Maynard (sounded like it here) who was dealing with ALL of our issues. That’s a lot for one man to deal with. Most notably the most recent posts.
But now AD drives nicely. No hesitations around a corner, no harsh tip ins at all(never had this issue with 2.1), I don’t have the harsh downshift coming to a stop also, unless I keep it in S2 and come to a stop. Always been there since day one. Other than that, I have sweet smooth down shifts and up shifts.

Ya’ll take this with a grain of salt if need be…the 2.1 delivers good torque down low. Stout enough to put a smile on your face quick. 100% Instafan good stuff feelings it delivers. 235 foot pounds of torque at 1225rpm’s is damn good in my book. Ever drive a 1980 Camaro Z28? 235-245 pounds of torque is damn good. And we’re pushing over 5600 pounds!!!

And one genuinely feels it. BEST mod ever for the 3G. I’m back to being like some, any excuse to drive the ‘18!!!

    Sounds awesome!

@Mcbelen I DIY purchased my tune from one of the main dudes. How do I go about getting this updated/tweaked file that Topanga Taco got?

I forgot to give a shout out to Big Papa! Those of you with KDMAX, it’s dang close between AD+ and Sport+. AD has a bigger sack down low, but I’d say KDMAX was close. Reminded me of a GM powerglide trans. 2.1 is smoother all around, but KDMAX held gears much better.

Some trade offs. But the torque down low is what was needed badly.

    2.1 FTW
