i have not heard much about this in probably 5-6 maybe 7 years, i even called toyota when i first heard about the thing where the lady claimed her toyota all the sudden took off and ran into some people or whatever and I gave them all my experiences, but they said it was totally different than what that ladies case was. my tacoma just has like a less than a second lurch forward vs that ladies car supposedly went full throttle and crashed or whatever.

in the first few years i know for sure this was happening and no one ever came up with an answer, just wondering if it happens in the newer ones and/or if anyone ever figured out how to fix it?

if you have never experienced this, here is an example

you have been doing normal driving in the city, say 45mph on a normal city street and you are coming to a red light, so you slow down like normal and come to a stop, then like 2-3 seconds later there is a quick "JOLT" or "LURCH" forward then back to normal.

i know some of you have this happen, but anyone ever figure out why? at first i thought maybe it was the centrical clutch in the rear locker sticking/releasing, but after it happening a few times when i was just doing normal street driving at relative low speeds i axe'd that idea.

    cheers,
    disco

Possibly the trans downshifting during deceleration. That would be my first guess.

well it could be the compressor for the AC kicking on. it revs the engine slightly and if you aren't slamming on your brakes it'll break free. the heater does the same thing when you're at a stop it'll rev it ever so slightly.

    Reserected from the dead.
Axle wrap and the telescoping of the drive shaft. When You stop, the axle slightly pivots forward and compressing the 2 piece drive shaft. The drive shaft splines are often poorly lubed from the factory an d when they compress, they kind of stick compressed. When they suddenly extend to the proper length you feel the "jolt from behind".

Remove the clamp from the bellows on the slip joint and grease the hell out of the drive shaft splines. I can't remember if there is a grease zerk. I know my Tundra has no grease zerk.

Drive without your heater or ac on.
    It's the "Taco Bump"......

Ac compressor is kicking in and they over compensate with the idle up.
Just drive it and see if it's gone when everything is shut off.
If it is then its normal...

It's normal. Do a search on this forum for "Automatic Lurch"

Mine has been doing it since I bought it new.

For me - if I come to a complete stop 'slower' - it doesn't do it. The faster I'm going and the faster I come to a complete stop, the more (and harder) it occurs. It doesn't matter if the A/C or heater is on or off.

I personally believe, because you are coming to a complete stop quickly (more or less), it's the transmission downshifting down to 1st. I've had this similar issue occur in other Auto transmission vehicles. My mother-in-laws old Grand Cherokee did it harder and a longer delay than the tacoma....

Agree with this. I have proved it to myself by dropping the driveshaft, applying new grease to the splines and re-installing. There is no grease zerk.

I had this same scenario happen to me on a used 2008 Chevy Silverado that I bought a couple of years ago. The first time it happened, I thought someone had run into the back of my truck at a stop light. I did quite a bit of research and found out there was a service bulletin on it. The splines inside of the drive shaft slip yoke needed greasing. It was hard to believe that this was causing the bumping at stops. I took it in to the dealership. They greased it for free and it took care of it for about 30k miles. Had to take it back again and have the same thing done again. It was a minor inconvenience. I though I had bought a truck with transmission problems.

axle wrap and if you have a two piece driveshaft, spline binding...if you come to a stop slowly, the axle does not wrap as much, thus no thump...

I got rid of mine after reading mega threads here at TW, less than a $100 in parts from Advance Auto and I have been good to go ever since....

Bummer the newer Tacoma's have no zerks for lubing, I faithfully grease mine at every oil change, works for me...

Yep, mine has done this since day one. First time I was at a red light and I thought I had been rear ended. Doesn't do it a lot but sometimes it almost acts like it wants to lunge forward.

Mine usually does it with the A/C on. When the compressor kicks on or off it lurches slightly. Since I have to back into my garage to within 2" of the back wall I always turn if off before backing in. Never had the "Axle Wrap" issue.

It's called idle surge and has been occurring on these trucks since at least the early 90's. It's something you learn to live with. Whenever I come to a complete stop, I give the brake pedal a little extra pressure to hold the truck if the idle kicks up.

I think I noticed that in the previous Tacoma I owned. It was one of the many things I didn't like about the automatic transmission. I noticed that mine did it when the AC compressor kicked on when at a stop with the transmission in D, like at a red light. The computer adds a little more fuel to compensate for the compressor running, and it's like you just tapped the gas pedal. The truck tries to jump forwards a little bit unless you're really on the brakes. Sound about right?

Happens to my 1998 5-Speed. My mechanic has no idea what it is. I've learned to stop in such a way so it will not happen but every now and then I slip up. Seems to be much worse on gravel.
