You are all lucky you never had to Ride with my Granddad..... He had one of those big assed Caddies and when he drove he would hit the gas freaking hard then immediately let the gas completely off for a brief second then Hit it to the metal again! over and Over....when I was 12 I use to think it was funny shit because others would get sick and no one wanted to ride with him driving....... When I got older and he no longer drove I asked him why he drove like that..... He said " Because it would shut everybody the @%*#! up" and I could drive in peace.... Yeah everybody was always arguing about something and I do remember how quite it would get when he drove.

No just to time the lights but people drive like idiots and still have to wait at the red light. Ain’t my business. I’m on time.

That's it right there. When you are commuting in heavy traffic there is no strategic advantage to speeding, following too close, and excessive lane changing. Go ahead and open up the throttle on a limited access highway with light traffic, you aren't doing any harm. Be situational and adaptable to the environment around you. There's a clear difference between a fully aware driver and a drone at the wheel.

As long as you do this type of driving in the far right lane, more power to you.

Around Atlanta if you drive the speed limit you're likely to get run over! It's far safer to just match traffic.

Societal problems in a nutshell right here. We're having a discussion on sensible driving styles. People get behind the wheel and think that the road is their domain and everyone else can screw off.

Respect your community and drive like a normal person. If you can't respect those around you, then you may want to examine your self-respect first.

I'm all for respecting those around you, and that's the problem with what you're describing. If you're causing people to regularly flip you off, then you are NOT respecting those around you.

Abiding by the law is nice, and I'm generally in favour of that, but if 99% of the population breaks said law, then maybe, just maybe, it's not a good law? I'm not advocating going 40 over the limit, but there's no need to be one of those self-righteous clowns that does things 100% by the book at the inconvenience of everyone else. There's always a good middle ground.

Furthermore, if the speed of traffic is 10 over the limit, and you're driving exactly at the limit, you are not being safer, but actually causing a dangerous situation and enticing road rage, which only compounds to the problem. If someone is being an idiot and going too fast, the best thing you can do is to let them pass and become a problem elsewhere. The worst thing you can do is to try to "stick it" to them by driving exactly the speed limit, blocking the road, etc.

Go with the speed of traffic, stick to the right lane if you're not passing, and let people get by you. You'll be safe, you'll be economical, you won't get hassled by the police, and you won't be pissing anyone off. It's simple.

My mother in law, bless her memory would drive with brake and gas either equally depressed or alternating...always, irregardless of speed. Never had an accident in her 80 years. Don't know about everyone else around her? Back on point...I drive my Tacoma hypermiling....a lot of lengthly coasting before red lights or stop signs. Average 24-5mpg on longer trips. 21-22 on shorter ones. Drives folks behind me crazy, but they zoom past and a few miles and lights up they are stopped, I pass them up without stopping at the green.....simply amazing.

You know I did not think about that but I do find myself doing that a lot because it just does not make sense to drive a full speed right up to the Red light then brake hard and having a Manual Transmission makes it even easier! so that could be one of the items I missed about why I get great Mpg.

I’d never give someone grief for going the speed limit in the right lane... and I think those that would are the ones of questionable character. Now people that plant their ass in the left lane and refuse to budge knowing all the while they’re impeding the flow of traffic... well yeah they’re self righteous assholes.
