You should probably prevent your truck from tracking you

My friend recently got a 3rd gen Tacoma so I came here searching for ways to disable tracking after watching this recent Cold Fusion video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Olo7B2ZydI

I did mostly find the information I was looking for, but I was shocked to see how many threads were full of accusations directed toward those wanting to disable such tracking of being overly paranoid or tin-foil hat wearers lol

In any event, it looks like there are legit reasons for wanting to disable such tracking, so I plan to help my buddy disable as much as possible.

Just thought I'd share!

I doubt any of us want our driving patterns being sold to 3rd-party data brokers and then in turn being sold to Insurance companies to be used to raise rates or deny warranty claims. Happy I have my 2nd gen =P

 

I have my cell phone in my pocket (on standby) when I talk about things like going shopping for ravioli or buying camera equipment, the next thing I know there are targeted ads popping up on my Internet searches.

 

Your friend might not want to connect their phone to the Tacoma.

I wish my phone was that smart. I replaced my water heater recently, and now I keep getting ads for more water heaters like I’m going to start some mother effing collection

 

It talks thru the DCM module - it can have the fuse pulled, in the engine compartment fuse box and the backup battery disconnected on the DCM it is separate from everything else except the bluetooth microphone. The DCM is behind the glove box. easy to get to. It disconnects the microphone for the Bluetooth. Search her for DCM & you will get the info. FIY the European union required cars have the DCM & Cellphone connection to reports crashes in 2018.

 

General Motors Smart Driver technology (program supposedly shut down now) was/is so advanced that it not only collected telemetry data on the car but could also identify the driver. Gm would then sell the driver telemetry to analytics/ratings companies who then turned around and sold the ratings to insurance companies.

The salesman had me sign up using the app after signing the purchase agreement. I recall seeing the words “provide data to insurance companies” and then I just declined it all and removed the app. Pushing the button when I got home got it done and the light was off after a nice chat with service rep. It still records, but should not send everything like speed and brake events now.

I'm ok with keeping my insurance low and raising that of aggressive drivers...

 

Which is why I think they have a law suit against them right now.
You’re feeling like you have nothing to hide? Eventually it may be used against you for one reason or another in the not so distant future.
The reality is that even if you disable the system, your cell phone is doing (or capable of) the same thing.

All that said, this will not get any better in the future, only worse. Unless you go device-free, there's no avoiding your info being collected or sold. Plain and simple.

 

Push the button in the truck and opt out of all connected services. You will get an email/letter like this:

 

And multiple companies are currently being sued for tracking you even if you opt out of tracking.

 

Super curious when you opt out what still works and what doesn't. I assume carplay works but the Toyota maps stop and the emergency help button stops. What else?
