I have a friend who runs one and his logic is sound. A winch’s full rating is with the full line extended, so on a short pull the winch is working harder. With a 12k, it’s less strain on the winch and will draw fewer amps so less strain on the trucks electrical too. Whenever I replace my winch I’m going to toss a 12k in there.

Agree to disagree. I’ve made some pretty sound points about how it’s all around easier on the truck and winch.

Yep, no real reason not to otherwise you would’ve mentioned them.

So the real issue with the 12k is it’s just overkill for the application?

The 12k I’m referencing is the smittybilt 12k X20. It’s the same exact form factor as the 10k, except the gearing is lower, so the only downside is the pull speed will be a little bit slower.

If that wasn’t the case and the only option was one larger/heavier then I agree it wouldn’t be necessary. Since it’s such an easy option though, why not? That’s why I’m saying it’s a valid option. You may have missed that though from the convo earlier.

Interesting. They are in fact the same size, but with 4 wraps on the drum the 12k is rated for less weight than the 10k. I wonder why that is.

Edit: and that 99lb weight is with steel cable. Will be around 75 with syn

I just checked, and the Warn Evo12s is only about 20# heavier than the 8S.

With the weight difference being so insignificant, I can't really see a downside to going bigger.

Where are you coming up with 100+ lbs?

How is anyone losing clearance by running a heavier rated winch? The 8, 10, and 12K winches all seem to be about the same size and weight.

You keep mentioning the increased size and weight but the winch we’re discussing is identical in size and weight to a 10k. And yes, less strain on the battery. Comparing a 6k pull between the two winches, it’s a 52 amp decrease for the 12k.

Regarding snatch blocks, you say the purpose is for an easier and slower recovery. That’s literally what the 12k is doing except it’s all built into it because it’s inherently slower, and easier on the winch.

Regular maintenance of a syn line and it does just fine out here. Mine gets washed every 3 months or so. Not to mention syn is safer and much easier to handle in a recovery.

    Me, too.

The dimensions on the Warn EVO 8, 10, and 12k are the same

Oh my goodness. You keep saying “most people go to warn” or “most people want a heavier winch for a higher speed” but that is not what we are discussing. Anyways, this conversation is going nowhere productive. Have a great night.

Maybe, just maybe, some folks prefer to oversize a winch so that they don't have to work it hard.

Of course, a snatch block helps, but there might be occasions where it's easier to hook up directly to something. Like, the nearest decent sized tree is 75' from the truck.

I don't expect my synthetic line to last forever. I plan on replacing it if and when it becomes worn.

    Do steel cables last forever?

I was actually thinking today how I should replace my snatch strap soon. It’s a few years old and seen A LOT of use. It’s not horribly frayed or anything but for $60, wouldn’t hurt to err on the side of caution and replace it.

Good call! You don't want to have it quit in the middle of a recovery!

    Mine's shiny and new:oops:

I like good discussion. Y’all have have good points for the areas you wheel. And while I haven’t hit the east coast yet... that’s coming end of next month.
I’ll definitely be weighing the options. I know a lot of people preach warn warn warn. But I know I won’t be using it that much (or at all hopefully) so really, it’s not a super need purchase just yet.

Knowing me I’ll have it next week.
