    I remember them well.
    Origin was from magnesium wheels used in the good old days by the drag racers.
    Very light but when you blew a tire and the "rim" hit the ground they could ignite and if you have seen magnesium burn it is real tough to stop due to it having it's own oxygen to keep it burning.

    Then came aluminium!

    I'm mid-30s and I grew up saying rims meaning the wheel, and wheel meaning the wheel + tire. Within the last year, I have fixed myself to use the correct term. Guess I did it because it also bugs me when people say "clip" instead of "magazine" incorrectly (gun reference).
