Good Morning everyone and thanks for stopping by. recently i acquired/lease a 2016 TRD Sport 4x2, i will be staying with it at the end of the lease. Like many of you you want to go through tough rails, river, mud or even sand and you can't really do it all with a Rear Wheel Drive. I have looked into a 4x4 conversion, everyone's says to just get a new truck or just don't do it at all. Has anyone though about a salvage donor truck, just transferring all of the applicable/required parts for the 4x4. Would that do it or should i not go through with it. Your two pennies are appreciated.

Cheaper to get a new truck.. if you leased may as well just wait or buy a trail rig

I would advise against doing any modifications to a vehicle that you are leasing.

some of this, a little of that
If you have enough money and fabrication skills anything is possible, I would get a different truck personally.

No way on a lease vehicle. Buy a cheap(er) trail rig to mess with or trade in.

This. Check with your lease contract - may not be allowed.

No reason to do it on most any vehicle. I've wanted a Quigley conversion for a long time as they are pretty expensive..... converting a van to 4X4 ain't much cheaper/easier. The same problems exist for a pickup. Just get what you want. There is no easier/cheaper way to do this.

Buying a 4x4 would be best option. If that's not an option, put lockers in. You'd be surprised where a locked up rear end will get you.

I assume if you decide to modify you would do that at least after lease. But if you are leasing just wait and dump it at the dealer and get 4x4.
I looked into this before with my previous 4x2 and it involves a lot of parts and labor.
    My 0.02 cents.

thanks fellas for the fast response all around, yeah im definitively thinking of doing it after the lease period. After lease period i will purchase it and finish it off as soon as possible, so i could get all other life affairs in place (home, etc.)

I have consider at the end of the lease getting a 4x4 but i would hate to start all over again from the beginning, and i will be paying a monthly payment for much longer.

i thought purchasing a salvage Tacoma 2016 donor 4x4 and just add all of the stuff into the one i currently one would be the best way to go with. i do have family friends with a salvage yards, that might facilitate the process of acquiring the donor. from my point of view it looks like this would be the best way of doing so

My advice? If you really want 4x4, find out what the current buy out price of your truck is, and compare market value to what it's worth and just sell it and get a new truck with 4x4.

The whole getting a donor truck, and transferring what is needed is a huge hassle - not only that, if you ever have issues with the truck, you may run into warranty problems.

Also I forgot to add, it might be hard to sell it down the road. When people check the vin and it would come up as 4x2, that might be suspicious to some people out there.
Another 0.02, so total is 0.04 now:)

I guess I add the story here. One time I was looking for a truck and I found this tundra on Craig's. I went to check and find out that it was aV6. And I asked guy how come, he said oh, I replaced it with Tacoma engine. That was the end of story. I said no thank you!
