I just bought a 2014 auto and I'd like to get at least 20 years of service out of it. I'm a novice as far as working on cars goes - willing to learn but I don't want to F up my brand new truck either. On my 99 taco I changed oil, flushed the radiator, and replaced a bad O2 sensor, that's about the extent of my experience. If I buy 5 quarts of OEM fluid and try this out, am I likely to screw something up?

If you can follow directions , you shouldnt have any problems checking the fluid level and adding some fluid . Not only will you find out if your trans is low but your going to learn some new stuff about your truck that you need to know should something happen off road or in an emergency . A few members on this site lost their transmission fluid in the middle of nowhere . Probably a good idea to know how to properly check the trans level at home .
Follow the write up by Foretech . There are some helpfull tips within the thread .http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/63851-how-drain-refill-automatic-transmission.html

It is unbelievable to me that Toyota has not addressed this problem after all these years!

Since so many of you are reporting low levels, I'm going to check my new 14. Even though it appears to shift fine now, I want it to last for many years.

Checked mine tonight! I have a 2013 Prerunner and it wasn't low from the factory. Got the small trickle when it got up to temp.

So all you had to do was pull off the overflow plug after it got hot, saw that some fluid come out, and you were good to go?

People getting confused because you didn't specify a yr in your OP subject line. So thats why there are mixed people posting they have dipsticks.

If people read the first post , they will see that the post covers all years and pertains to the 4 litre engine with no dipstick :D

UPDATE - Just for the record , it looks like dealerships DO NOT CHECK the fluid when they sell you the vehicle and will not check it unless you complain you are having problems

I just bought my truck last week and don't have to tools required to check the fluid levels should I just take it to the dealership and inquire or complain?

Unless plans change, I'll be picking up a brand new work Tacoma in a couple of weeks. I'll be picking it up from our southern service yard and as soon as I get it back to my office I'll park it, let it cool, and do the proper level check. Even if I have to use my personal stock of Amsoil ATF on it, it will be worth it. Tax payers will be getting their money's worth out of this truck.

I haven't actually done the procedure to put the truck in Temp Check Mode, but I've never noticed an AT Temp light EVER on my dash during startup. Do all tacomas with auto have the light?
