Back in the 70's the Broncos where very popular. They were tough and fun for off roading. My kid brother had one 1974 and he would go with the big boys GM,Dodge. He would climb hills that others could not with his little Bronco no shit. Toyota trucks where not around yet till If I recall 1978-79 cause I had a new 78 GMC 4x4 around that time.

Toyota took almost a year replacing the passenger side airbag in my 2013 4Runner and simply said for nobody to ride in the passenger seat.

The dealership also stole my rubber floor mats that I paid for because they told me they were recalled, even though they were the new style, not the one that allegedly were killing people who like to stack floor mats like pancakes.

All in all, there was some class action suit and I got an $80 check from Toyota.

I have a 10-year-old F150 with 143,000 miles on it and a 17-year-old Tacoma with 244,000 miles on it. Both have basically been trouble free. The Ford needed a water pump replaced under warranty at 85,000 miles. The only real money I've spent on the Tacoma was for an alternator at 170,000. Everything else was under warranty or old enough that I expect it to wear out.

I've obviously spent a little more on the Tacoma because it is older. It cost me $550 for new headlight assemblies a couple of years ago and I just spent a bit over $1200 on new shocks, struts and sway bar links including labor. But those are all things that will wear out and I don't fault the truck.

I like my Tacoma, but they aren't perfect. Calling it a truck with only 900-1200 lbs of payload is a joke. My Ford Explorer has 1500 lbs, a Ranger about 1700, and even the Honda Ridgeline is around 1600. If I were replacing my Tacoma today I'd look very hard at Ranger even knowing about the recall. They will make it right and the Ranger gets better fuel mileage, has a lot more power, and tows more than a 3rd gen Tacoma's while costing less. Waiting to see how the 4th gen Tacoma works out.

Reliability to me means not needing to bring it in for warranty work. It's a total hassle to lose time at work or personal time for a repair that shouldn't happen. I haven't had a domestic vehicle that didn't have to go back to the dealer for some warranty work within the first year. Usually something that needed attention immediately so it certainly wasn't convenient. Add to that the difficulty to have them provide a same vehicle (pickup truck) as a loaner for the duration of the repair and reliability becomes a highly valued attribute to me. Domestic vehicles haven't provided me the value I feel I've paid for. I hope this Tacoma provides this. So far so good at 10 months and 27k Kms without a hiccup. This is better than any domestic I've ever owned.

I concur... My Toyota dealership in Colville WA. is excellent. The mechanics there are all salt-n-pepper haired guys (No 18 year-old McDonald's fry basket rejects) who know what they're doing. They actually go the extra mile and I never worry that they may have screwed something up.
I think a lot of it is 'Small Town vs. Big City'.... Big City, you can get away with a lot of bullshit. Small Town, everyone knows everyone else, they're your neighbor, and if you screw with people? Word gets around quickly and you're not gonna last long.
