Keep In mind I am NEW to this ..I thought I saw a tail gate that dropped " slowly" piston vs cable.... was I crazy? Is it worth it..

Also, time to bite the bullet....Wheels and tires.....Want a conservative set that will have folks in passing look twice and say DAMN !

No, you are not crazy. The tailgate on the 3rd generation Tacoma drops slowly like that. It is nice - they do not slam Even the seat and cover on the newer American Standard toilets do that. I heard a plumber refer to that as "a marriage saver".

There is an aftermarket shock setup called EZ down, but a lot of people have had problems with it trashing the cable.

I compared a 3rd gen tailgate with a 2nd gen tailgate. I knew they wouldn't interchange, but I wanted to find out the details. Here's the results. You can't put the 3rd gen hinges on the 2nd gen tailgate. The bolt spacing is different. You might be able to to cut, weld and redrill. It looks like you might be able to put the 3rd gen hinge part in the bedside, but it's too hard to tell. The spacing between the pivot and the latch is the same between both gens. So, the end result is that you might be able to put the 3rd gen tailgate and hinges on the 2nd gen bed BUT, the 3rd gen tailgate is about 1" taller, so you would need to section about 1" out of the tailgate between the latch and the top edge. You would also need to do something about the "wing" part of the tailgate that doesn't match up with the 2nd gen bed. And all that is dependent on whether the curve matches the taillight. So, in conclusion, it would be about as difficult as putting an International pickup front clip on a '59 Cadillac.

i think redline tuning also makes what you described for your tailgate.. i havent ever used it though so i cant vouch for whether or not its worth it. Their hood struts are great though, i have used those on my truck and i got some for my dads as well
