If you don't mind dispersed camping and want to see aspens changing I would suggest the Dixie National Forest, Duck Creek Village area. There is also places to stay if you need a bed. I know your destination is Yellowstone but you could use the area as a stay over. Its about 60 miles north of Zion (US89 to UT14). It gets you up into a little elevation and there is a decent amount to do there and see. ATV rentals with hundreds of miles of trails and dirt roads, lots of hiking, caves, etc. If you end up that way check out Strawberry Point it is an amazing lookout (unless you don't like heights). You can even see parts of Zion on clear days.

When in the winter did you go?

Cool, I'll keep that in mind and look into it

Call up a couple outdoor shops/bike shops in Hurricane to find out about dispersed camping around there if you're going to Zion. The campgrounds in the park are an absolute zoo and you should probably book them as early as possible if you want to stay in the park. I've done a lot of mountain biking at Gooseberry Mesa which is about 30-40 minutes from the west entrance to zion and that's free dispersed camping, but there may be something closer to the park as well.

You should at least hike a little ways up the narrows in Zion as well, even if it's just a half mile or something, it's a bit busy with tourists, but definitely one of those must-see unique places while you're there.

Definitely check out Bryce canyon as well while you're in the area even if you just drive the scenic road and check out the overlooks. Pretty amazing rock formations and a cool contrast to Zion. In Zion you drive through the bottom of the canyon, in Bryce you drive along the top of it and look down on the structures.

If it fits your schedule- consider Sand Hollow State Park in UT- on West side of Zion.

Sand Hollow is pretty rad. I went a couple years ago with a buddy for a dirt bike trip. Out in the Warner Valley area

Hey thanks for all the great info in this thread, I'm heading up to Monument Valley then over to Zion next week. So trying to find as many camp sites as I can, because I know its going to be crowded.

It’s hot as hell already, I’d be looking for shade. There’s some BLM land on North Creek that got a lot of cottonwoods (on the Kolob Terrace Rd, just north of the town of Virgin.)

It tends to attract all sorts tho since it’s less than a 1/4 mile off the roadway.
