Just watched the episode.

I don't think anything is in the hikers backpack. As others have said, it was to show they are looking out for themselves and that's it.

I didn't want to ask this since it would spark the whole "it's not realistic" deal but would a pistol shot to the abdomen with body armor really drop and knock out man?

 

I wondered the same thing, and even if it does would it really put him out for that long?

 

I read a thing that compared this episode to the couple of episodes where they found the Randall kid that was held captive in the barn and that Rick and Shane fought over.

Rick did a lot to protect Randall and keep him from being eaten and to give him a fighting chance in the world.

Rick fought with Shane about him 'coming back' from the path he was taking, like Rick knew there would be a critical point where either Rick or Shane would be dead.

Rick is fighting with Morgan to come back as well, but from insanity, where Rick is also on the path too.

 

I don't think that Randall kid would have ever taken the right path...its just as well he was bitten...

To me, the backpacker was too much of a risk - there was something definitely odd about that. As I and others have said, it must have been a trap or something of the like. Under those circumstances, who would have been walking down the middle of the road w/ no weapons? Too many living and dead bad ones...

I agree w/ your take on Rick and Morgan. I think that is what Rick needed to snap him out of it...

 

randall wasnt bitten, shane killed him and he came back. that is when the group started to realize what rick already knew.

I still stay when they get into the backpack, there going to realize it was someone they new and should have helped.

The only reason I say this is they never show the guys face. Why would they not show his face?

 

no worries at all, and just set that dvr for the b&w episodes. they will get to that point soon so you can remember plus watch it like an old school zombie flick.

I think the hiker with the pack was just showing how they are only helping themselves and take what they want.

 

I think the hiker was there to show us the evolution of rick as a whole, that the once sacred moral fiber that he once held onto has frayed.
