I am not sure, which goes bad faster - diesel or gas? What we didn't see in there were weapons and any real military gear, which makes me wonder if that was a medical station.

It's either a mutated zombie virus or another virus like Ebola that spreads from animals to humans and kills quickly. As conditions in the apocalypse are similar to a 3rd world country, disease can spread extremely quickly and there's no cdc to contain it. As soon as someone dies, they turn shortly after. I'm leaning toward other disease because there's no reason the main cast won't get the new mutated zombie virus.
I figure the kid that turned in the shower bites a bunch of the prison population and the main crew vacates...fast.

little known fact, a diesel engine can run efficienty with vegetable oil. Rudolph Diesel , the inventor of the first diesel engine, designed it for just that. petrolium diesel is cheapest now, but if your at the grocery store and ran out of gas youre in luck.

This is why I don't think the water is contaminated. The walker in Hershel's well was in there for who knows how long. They had to of gotten water from that well at least once without knowing of the walker.

But not all the water they used on the farm came from just one well. They had to of used the walker well for watering crops or animals and nothing there indicated infection through the water.
