I took my son off roading for the first time on our 06 Tacoma TRD and man did we both have a lot of fun. It was our first time trailing in the El Paso desert and he is now hooked.. He asks me every day to go off roading on the weekend. Its awesome! I am thinking of adding a 3" lift on my truck..any suggestions? I am also looking to adding 18" Jeter Ballistic wheels along with 285 65 r18 Nitto Mud Grappler tires.

That's awesome! If you keep the truck long enough you can pass it off too!. As for the lift, do you have a budget?

I am definitely passing it along to him. As far as a budget..... I want a nice decent 3" lift for a decent price. Not looking for anything cheap but not looking to empty my wallet. Any suggestions?

That is great! My father was from the city so his rendition of offroading was blasting through snow embankments with his big brown 82 Cadillac Deville when we moved to the suburbs...I loved every minute of it!

For real off-roading, you want to stay clear of 18" and larger rims, and stick with 17" or better yet, 16". More sidewall to flex, larger tire contact patch when aired down.

Awesome man, I hope to do the same with my son. Not to mention tossing him the key so I can upgrade to a Gen 4, a few years away!

Even if you don't plan on doing trails that would benefit from a 16 or 17" wheel. I believe tires are significantly cheaper for these sizes. Which means more mod money to be had :)

What he said.....upped my Tundra from 16 to 17 when she was pretty new...regretted it due to the higher tire prices down the road. Now it seems 17's are pretty much the norm with 16's having less variety and most everyone making a wide selection of 17's. Plus the 17's somehow just seem to be about the right size wheel for the Tacos...but that's simply my view.

I'm glad to hear that you guys had a blast together! My dad and I have always had fun snowmobiling and dirt biking together, even when I was a shitty teenager haha. It's good to have a common father/son hobby.
