I don't have a first gen truck to verify, but looks like this only works if you have the push button on the side of the 4wd shifter. Unplug that connector, and the truck will not automatically shift to 4wd when moving the lever into low range. 4wd still works fine, just have to push the button.

If you have a manual transfercase that requires you to move the lever for 4wd (no pushbutton), this mod won't work.

Grey wire mod is for the rear diff locker to work without being in low range.

So it's pretty much like doing a twin stick but half electric and infinitely cheaper?

From what I've read in the past, the 2 low mod turns off the add on one side allowing all of the power to be put to that side. It only works if you have an open diff in the front. Your driveshaft still spins as if you are in 4wd. I don't remember the procedure for doing it, so I can't really help you there. But from what I remember you have to cut a wire and install a toggle switch so that when you put it in 4 low, you flip the switch to disengage one of the front axles and then it goes into 2 low.

If you unplug the connector it probably disconnects the actuator that switches it to 4wd. (Depending on what transfer case you have) so when u put ur shifter in 4 low ur only really getting 2 low.

If u have a J shift transfer case you can get twin sticks that will let you control 4wd separate from low/high.

Just finished the 2 Low mod on my 1996 Manual Transfer Case.

Simple wiring of a switch into the 4WD indicator wiring, and there ya go, 2WD Low.

^^^ 100% correct. From someone with a push button 4wd 1st gen who has done this mod.

The connection that gets unplugged is just a signal wire from the transmission to the transfer case that tells it to engage 4wd when you shift into low. Disconnect it and now you fully control when 4wd activates by pressing the button.
