How do i replace steering rack bushings

    As the title says, I replace all my inner and outer tie rods about 6 months ago. Started noticing a pooping sound in the front while pulling in and out of my driveway like one was bad. I ended up laying under the truck and noticing my whole steering rack flops around, so i checked if the bolts were tight and they were. Bushings look completely shot, how does one go about replacing them?

    Its the bushing where if mounts to the sub frame!

    So, i leave in 6 days for the army. I want to fix this because my mom will be daily driving the truck, theres no way i could get the energy suspension ones before i leave... Would ones for the local parts store "knechts" work?

    If they are the right size, I am sure they would, but you have to be careful about slightly different sized bushing sleeves for one of the bolts, I think the biggest one. The kit from Wheelers some with two different ones. The write-ups may mention this.

    The only other thought is that the local store will likely only have rubber ones rather than urethane, if you care about that. I don't think you will want to do this job twice.

    My truck was out of commission for 2 weeks because I got the wrong parts from wheelers. Luckily they made it right but yeah...

    Make sure you have both wheels off the ground, and jackstands under the frame, that way the tires pivot and you can pull the steering rack out more

    I could barely tell it was moving.....:D Yea they need replacing asap lol ive had my urethane ones sitting in the box since december but seeing yours I think I got more time :D lol

    It moves futher than that both ways now ;) Make it feel like driving a 90's ford with shot ball joints and tie rods <3

    I ordered some from knechts, 27 bucks. Mom's going to be driving the truck while im in basic and ait so i want it all nice :)

    So i DID IT!!! took 2 days... the drivers side bolt was bent and i couldn't get it out, so i completely removed the rack and knocked the bolt out. Put it back into shape with a large hydraulic press. Went home and it slid in fine.

    After getting that bolt snug and the middle bolt snug, i attempted to do the passenger side bolt... This is where it went bad... Apparently i must have cross threaded it or something of the sort, as i was torquing it down to the recommended amount it stripped.

    Its still pretty snug in there but i watched metal shavings come out, so my question is could a shop pull the bracket and fix the threads?

    I dont understand how a 10" 16mm bolt gets bent in half when i take the full force of a hydraulic press to bend back?

    But i did get the bushings pressed in and put on! now just that one bolt and it should be tighter than a 12 year old. I don't have to much play but i would rather not risk having my mom drive it to work after i leave for the army and having that bolt flop out!

    Also test drove it, steering is so much nicer than the 1/2 inch of play left and right that it had!!

    I re-checked, the bracket isnt upside down :p but it is still stripped!

    12 year olds aren't tight anymore...

    I would think chasing the hole with a tap should help the hole, but you probably need a new bolt. Usually the bolt loses the majority of the material.
