I'm going to get a low mileage Taco with no rust, set it up for storage and put it in mothballs until my current first Gen dies and disintegrates. (only 38k miles on it now so I'm thinkin' ~ 20+ years or so) Then I'll activate the stored unit and carry on.

I am second owner. Older fellow owned before me and being an old-school (read thrifty) New Englander, he wasn't about to spend any money ".. washin a damn truck." So she got pretty rusty in the frame. It got inspected in 2009 and undercoated. Toyota insisted that it would be fine now... well, in 2011 I asked them to go through it again and it failed so new frame.
This year I pulled the truck completely apart, removed the bed, replaced the entire rear assembly, new fuel tank, new drive-shafts/carrier bearing, new Radflo 2.5's all round and Camburg UCA's. Then Line-X'd the bed and rocker panels. Still a work in progress but she's mostly new now...

This young lady has laid "Claim" to the '02 Tacoma she is in..;) So in 8-9 years I will be "cruising" an RX Lexus..

Toyota has completed every "campaign" on it and with 67k original miles it should be a great TOY for her also..

I am in San Diego, Ca. Diesel is Expensive out here! More than Premium gas!

Why the desire for diesel?? Also more maintenance?

When the Tacoma is extinct, I'll go back to even more extinct Land Cruisers where it all began for me. :)

Fortunately, I don't think Land Cruisers will ever be extinct.

I can only pray that when my 1st gen finally passes through the gates of Toyota Heaven, that Toyota will once again be making and selling in the US a SMALL sized truck. Please oh please make it so. The 1st gen is the perfect size for off road travel, enough room to store all the gear, but still small enough to fit the trail.

I'm telling you that within the next 10 years (or less) the 4Runner will be gone from the US and so will the Tacoma. Toyota will be consolidating to a global vehicle lineup. There will be some kind of 4Runner replacement and the Hilux will likely replace the Tacoma.

Now if they offer the Hilux with a D4D in the US I won't be so upset.
