I writing to try and help a friend who has a Tacoma 4x4 4dr 2004 with a frame that is completely rusted out. Toyota is giving him the run around so the dealer can't do much. He never received the recall notice, as I also never got one, but I got my truck repaired probably because it is a gen2 version. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ron

I believe it's not a recall. It's an extension on the warranty. I haven't had my truck too long so I didn't get a notice, and I don't know if any were sent out.

It is somewhat regionally based. Call Toyota USA and explain the problem. They may be able to offer some help.

Toyota is doing a warranty extension or service bulletin on the 2005's to 2006's I believe much as they did for the 1996 thru 2004. This is largely because if they list it as a safety issue then there would be a complete recall and the government would get involved. A 2004 may not have been in the group that was included in the service bulletin, not all the trucks in those years were. I would take lots of pictures and send them to Toyota with a cc to the appropriate government agency. Toyota should really be replacing the frames on all these trucks not just covering the problem with some wax.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
He's wrong, the recall extension goes out to 15 years after the truck was made, so for mine, for example. I'd have until 2019 to have my frame done. Unless I'm missing something. You might be thinking of the 1999 and older first gen Tacomas, because those are all 15+ years old now.

It's true the the extension goes out 15 years since the truck was first sold I believe but you had to get your truck inspected before a certain date and Toyota was less than diligent in getting the notices out and many owners including the previous owner of my truck didn't get one and it was only after reading about it here that I went to the dealer and sure enough my truck was included. The frame on my truck was ok so they put on the silly wax and a couple years later it is pealing off to reveal a rusting frame, of course its now 16 years since my truck was sold and being a 98 the best I could get is the buyback anyway. All the minor details don't change the fact that this is very much a safety issue and a total recall should be issued but I guess Toyota prefers to do it quiet rather than do it right. Of course if they are just replacing frames with the same type of defective material that was originally used be prepared to do a lot of welding in the future.

Was it just the Tacoma's with the bad rusty frames
or did the 2003 - 2005 4Runners also have these
    same problems?

    I'm currently looking for a 2003 - 2005 4Runner
and don't want to have to deal with this issue.
I live in Michigan, the "salt state".
