Looking for a good how to "paint rims"

Hello,
Is there a good how-to for painting the base rims out there?

Look for autohow.tv in google how to paint a wheel. He does it to a rim on a mustang, but its a pretty good video on it. I know the guy who made it, and my old car is in some of the introductions.

I posted this in a thread on TTORA. maybe not exactly what you're looking for but should help.

I've rattle-canned several sets of wheels with good results. You need to use rougher sandpaper. More importantly you need to use primer. I have always used Rustoluem for painting wheels. I tried Duplicolor in the past and had problems with it flaking. I've had better results with Rustoleum.

My steps are:
1) wash the wheels
2) lightly sand the wheels with 200 grit
3) clean wheels and wipe down with tack cloth
4) Mask the tires with painters tape or use index card method
5) 2 coats of Rustoleum Automotive Primer
6) 3-4 coats of Rustoleum paint in chosen color. Follow brand instructions for allowing color to dry before applying clearcoat.
7) optional: 3-4 coats of Rustoleum clear coat.

I prefer using clearcoat because it adds an extra layer of protection to the paint. If you want a flat finish, there is also matte finish clear coat availiable.

and yes it gets wheeled and the paint is holding up great.

Nothing wrong with rattle can if you do it right.

what wheels are those on that tacoma?

I've had good luck with the duplicolor wheel paint. Harder/thicker than body paint comes in range of colors from black to silver to gold to bronze type. Good luck finding it in other than silver though.

If you go on duplicolors website they walk you throught the painting process as well. It helped show me everything I did wrong. Crash and burn live and learn.

 

I paid a dude at work to paint my wheels. He fixes up cars as a hobby/side job but these were the first wheels he ever painted.
1. Washed the wheels with a power washer and SOS pads.
2. Sanded front and back with 320 wet n dry.
3. Sprayed both sides with NAPA Self Etching Primer # 7220 in cans. Three coats, then sanded with 600 wet n dry.
4. Washed the wheels again with Johnson & Johnson baby wash.
5. The wheels were then painted with NAPA Toyota Trim Black # 7244 using an Iawata gun with the clear tip. The paint was cut with medium reducer.
6. The backs were painted first, three coats, 15 minutes dry time between coats. Then the front of the wheels, three coats, 15 minute dry time between coats.
7. The tires were left on the wheels and masked with masking paper and tape, the weights were removed prior to painting and were painted separately. He put the wheels on a table and painted them standing upright, the wheel was turned as needed to get to all the spots.
It cost $200. bucks and that included the paint. When the factory tires wear down I would like to get the KMC XD-Series Enduros with the largest tire that will fit on a five lugger.

 

Serious question. I'm thinking about painting my M/T Classic Locks. What happens when I need to remove the tires? Will the paint chip and look like arse?

 

It is possible. I did a so so job on some Jeep wheels I had one time and when I got 31's they got a little chipped mostly from where they had to move the weights. It shouldn't look real bad but you could end up with a few chips. Worst case, if you painted them once...you can do it again.
