Excellent advice. Thank you. It's amazing the places you can go in 4 High with Trac. It has already saved my bacon in places others easlily got stuck. And with the yellow wire mod, for us non TRD, non locker owners, open axles are no longer a problem in 4 Low.

Not necessary, last year we had to bail out right in front of hurricane that brought 4 - 6 feet of ocean swell, well that pretty much submerges the parts of the Carova beach and the only way out was through the water. Rental agency created convoy and brought some heavy duty 4x4's for a rescue.
Thats why breather mod will be piece of mind in case you need to drive through water. Carova beach is not very high over sea level and there is no other way out. I am surprised that rental agencies allow people with pseudo 4x4 to rent houses there. Here when you want to drive on the beach you need to meet set of requirements otherwise they will kick you out. OBX has no minimum requirements so when crap happens not only you have to drive through water to get out but also dodge stuck POS trucks.

Yeah, it just seemed like those guys were joyriding in the ocean, that seems not only just bad as far as getting saltwater everywhere, but it also seems like it wouldnt be that difficult for a surge to pick the truck up and drag it into deeper water...

Here in quebec, they put salt on the roads 6 months a year because ppl can't drive in snowy conditions. THAT promotes rust.

seven miles of beach driving thats a long way on sand..just don't stop and make sure you have some extra hands to puch you out if need be. I have seen 4 wheel drives stuck in the sand at Carolina beach near Wilmington. I went out there in a jeep and that sand is surprisingly bumpy.

I have driven just about every where you can in the OBX and never had a problem. I dont have lockers or wide tires, and never have had to air down. The beaches are pretty user friendly if you stay away from the other idiots down there. Stay in 4x4 and stay out of the wet sand, and dont let all the stuck ford super duties intimidate you!;)

Lol yea its the heavy engine all right, I think its a combination of the driver's attitude and skills, weight, lack of ground clearance, and weak differentials...... They think because their truck has 38x15.50s that they cant get stuck, I love driving around them with the stock tacoma....

I always go down to Dewey Beach,DE for surf fishing, before i hit the sand, air down my tires to 20-22 psi put to 4H and shift in 3rd gear and don't have problem at all with the losse beach sand here in DE.

I have been going down to the OBX for years and the Tacoma is the best ride to have it up there. I have been lowering my tire pressure to 12 PSI. That works the best for me, stay in the tire tracks that other people have created with their trucks. Bring a tow rope and a shovel with you just in case. You might need it for your self or you might just want to help someone else who is stuck. Make sure you clean the bottom of the truck really well after you are done cause the salty sand does nothing good for the truck. Get on the beach enjoy the ride and wave to all the other people that are on the beach.
